PvP Weekly Update 06/15/2012

Short update this week.

The question last week was if this update should continue on a weekly basis or perhaps change. I read through all the replies and weekly looks like the overall favorite.

Iíll continue to do weekly updates, but just as a reminder some weeks may not have much information. This week for example is a small update. I also saw a great suggestion in last weekís thread that I think Iíll incorporate into the weekly updates, which was if I donít have much to talk about I should pose a question to the PvP forum to discuss.

This weekís question :

What if anything do you actually like about the current PvP system ?

Iím not asking what you donít like, just if there is anything that you do like about it.

That Ker'rat, buggy mess that it is, exists. Too bad it's the only mixed open PvP content in the game.

Well, when there aren't dozens of Carriers around in C&H and Arenas.

Agreed - Player vs Environment vs Player is awesome, even if buggy.

I like the fact that you currently have "Fed vs KDF", "Fed vs Fed" and "KDF vs KDF". I do NOT want to see "mixed teams" of Fed/Klingon players vs Fed/Klingon players (unless done through suggestion below).

I'd suggest the following:

- Add a War Games mode, which allows players from both sides to queue, and end up in random/mixed teams
- Remove the level banded PVP queues, and allow players of all levels to queue together.
- Lowlevel players get a "Bolstered" buff which effectively increases damage output and health values, to a comparable level to that of a max level player. Due to lower tiered gear, a low level player would still find difficulties fighting a max level player, but should certainly not be considered "cannonfodder" anymore. 2 or more lowlevel players should be competitive vs a single max level player.

I like:
  • relatively low gear dependency (i.e. no need to grind for weeks before I'm ready to play a character in pvp)
  • 5v5 arena matches
  • ship gear/bo customisation
  • the opvp community
  • sensible players who agree to premade vs premade matches without c-store consoles

I like about the current PvP system;

- The ability to customize our builds in PvP with different gearsets (Yes also Omega/Maco/Borg/Aegis is fun to play with, too bad there arent others. So PVE can keep bringout out new Gear that is both useful in PvP and PvE basically. I dont see the point in specific PvP gear anyway since the good PvP'ers know whats viable to use in PvP. I also like the doff system for that particular thingy, more customization makes our builds more diverse.

- I like so that i can still my skill tree and respec to optimize/change my build and rethink my build/strategies. Too bad respec tokens are way too expensive and should be looked at. Especially for PvP'ers to stay viable in PvP occasional respeccing (Even if it were just to see if a skill spec actually works) its really required and essential. But the cost of respec tokens is just way too much now.

- I like 5v5, but I also like when a match puts me in a 4v4, or 3v3 even, which rarely, but does happen. Why? Its more controlled environment, less chance of having a spam match with all the new pets and &*%$&$# --- I also like 1v1's to test out new builds etc etc. Its not really part of PvP, well it basically is, but i like it.

- I like the new ships that are brought into the game, but as a real Escort player I'd like to see more of the Defiant/Jemmy/Mvam(Beta) like ships. Anyways, new ships also makes us PvP'ers buy them, why? Not just because they are potentially OP, but we like to fly what we want to fly right? This is no different with PvP'ers. If i fly a dumb looking ship, i dump it, no matter what the specifications are.

- I like the maps that have been made for PvP, never the less boring after a while and basically no dynamics inside it. I miss 1 of the most beforehand maps for instance the Badlands, this would be an ideal map for PvP with dynamic influences, plasma storms, spots where u might possibly hide, etc.

- Teamplay, without it its not so much fun after a while. Pugging is fun as well. I like either pug vs pug, where I'm also part of the pug. Why? Because the matches are pretty equal then most of the time. I also like premade vs premade with controlled rules on what we should and shouldnt take (Obviously alot of unbalanced P2W spam/consoles)

- OrganizedPVP community, if those guys werent there, i would probably have stopped playing this game. I even love the QQn thats going on there regularly

- Ker'rat... yes... I do not come there often because its so buggy and it takes too much effort to go there mostly :p But since its the only Open world PvP existing in this game i have no real choice but to like it, right?

Thats what I like, unfortunately there is more in PvP that i DONT like or thats just basically not there.
But since that wasnt your question I will pass those for now

I have a nice idea for PvP by the way, (we need more different game modes than just senselessly raping each other):Create some kind of football game where there are 2 goals and an 'Ejected Warpcore' represents the ball. Basically the team needs to keep the warp core and instead of shooting a ball in a goal we would have to smash the warp core against the opposing team's Starbase!

Or make a timer on the ejected warpcore so there is a limited time for either team to make the final move or else Get the $#%# outta there! (20km blast radius!) make it canon!

Yes Ker'rat. DStahl said one day that it was going to be nuked... I was sad and I'd much rather see it fixed. Most importantly faction specific spawn points and making sure that NPC's do not get stuck in the sides of other objects thus making them untargetable while they can target you. Variation of PVE goals would be great as well. I would go there more often if I didn't have borg Sphere's stuck in things.

  • The OrganizedPvP Community is a lot of fun to hang around with. If it wasn't for the overall STO community and the OPvP community specifically, I probably would have long stopped playing entirely.
  • Team Based Play - If it was all just solo PvP, it couldn't keep me. THe concept of cross-healing and coordination is what makes PvP fun.
  • Build Options - Some skills seem mandatory currently, others underpowered, but even then, there is still a lot of room for interesting builds. I would love to see more build directions for each class and ship to go with, though.
  • Low Gear Dependency - Sure, there are the STF sets and they basically ruin a lot of item choice, but it doesn't really matter whether you have the Mark XI or Mark XI variants, and even the "old" style STF sets are still highly competitive. I don't like to grind to have a hope of being competitive in PvP, and I don't need to do that in STO.
  • I like Ker'rat. In my mind,it's not "serious" PvP like ARenas are. The map is broken mechanically in so many areas. But it brings some chaos to everything. You don't know if you'll be the hunted or the hunter. It is a great place to hang out between queued PvP matches.
  • Close Arena Matches. These are the best. It doesn't matter whether it is because you are in a chaotic PuG where neither sides really coordinates or if it's two premades duking it out - close matches can be fun and can be real nail biters.

1. I like that the best pvp gear has to be acquired by playing the game's content instead of endlessly grinding pvp matches. I feel like that is a good thing, ANYONE can have the best pvp gear even if they haven't done a single match before.

2. I like that the pvp is very much a team activity, and the devs have done their best to balance the effectiveness of weapons on a 5v5 scale.

3. Ker'rat is the best, I've had so many harrowing & epic fights there. I wish all systems were open to both sides like Ker'rat.

4. Cap & Hold is so much fun when you get full teams on both sides, I miss the days when you could get 15v15 fights on the regular.

5. I love the Federation vs Klingon "War" (I use air quotes because sometimes it doesn't feel like a war since you let feds into kdf space) don't end the war ever.

6. OrganizedPVP channel, those guys have been the sole reason to keep on playing a game that is very lacking in the pvp department.

As I said in another thread I like how the ships balance against each other. Consoles and BO powers are a different matter.

I like the pace of arena play too. Sometimes it takes too long but that is when it is boring cruiser vs cruiser with too much cross healing. There are other times when a match takes a long time but then the teams are so well composed and played that you are too busy to notice the time till your fingers start to hurt.

So I guess I really like a good team mix and the complexities that brings to the match.

Oh and thank you for keeping the weekly format, Gozer.
