Transport ships in Star Trek and in STO haven't really had a modernization, and the only reason for this I can think of is the age old "if it ain't broke don't fix it"
However will all the recent conflicts and the ongoing Federation-Klingon war perhaps it's time these old beats of burden get an upgrade.
Not only time for an upgrade, but also an expansion by having a faction specific design for each faction. The very nature of a transport frigate is perfect for the new LOR Romulan storyline, and by modernizing the designs and allowing them to be purchased through the c-store would increase direct sales of the ship.
Faction specific transwarp

3 fore 3 aft weapons
rapid fire missile defense system console (only equippable on cargo frigate to retain lobi store version)
universal boff stations
Modernized Nx-01 bridge layout (bridge also sold separately in c-store to maximize profit) for fed variation
Romulan shuttle interior for Rom version (add turbo lift off of back room to crew/eng/cargo deck
repurposed Klingon bridge for Klingon version.
All three variations would receive custom crew/eng/cargo deck maps
Just move Tuffli freighter to the store and it will be a hit!
It is only a shuttle after all so even at treble price (1500zen) they would fly out the store.

Defecting from the Federation to the Romulans from May 21st
Nah Tufflis are beat to death, time for a more modern design, and despite the additional time for developing 3 faction specific ones, those of us that plan on keeping our ships/gear faction accurate, having a design variant for each faction would help maximize profit.
Freighters, of whatever design, should be quite common I should think. Right now, the Tuffli and the D'kora are up for ridiculous amounts in the exchange, and virtually impossible to get any other way.
What about the "Monarch"? Or whatever it would be called. The freighter Kruge blows up at the beginning of ST3? Might be only in the director's cut version or whatever. FASA had it for their game.
FASA also had a bunch of freighters in one of their suppliments, for the Federation. Some inspiration for designs there, if nothing else.
