Dear Devs and Community,

As this game evolves and grows in the future we may be looking at our builds and questioning them. Just about every aspect of this game is flexible, I can play any type of character, on any ship type, and build out my ship in just about every conceivable way. However the choices you make in your personal build are stuck to you solidly unless you pay to respec your character. The impact of these choices are misunderstood by most veteran players, and definitely more casual ones.

Let's be brutally honest, this game needs to evolve and grow on the space and ground combat front. Are we simply going to have to pay for respecs every time something new is added or even worse changed? In the future, elimination of some of these costs will allow me to run a more exotic build, that I wouldn't consider now. I would also like to see more options tailored to running a specific ship. The build you choose will not always be optimal switching from different types of vessels, for example Patrol Escort -> RSV.

Devs this will also help you, yes HELP you. You can more consistently change the mechanics of the game to make more build styles viable within the original framework. This would probably be one of the biggest boosts to PvP you guys could do in the short term.

For Example, since you guys made the change to power insulators being so tremendously important, I believe any serious PvPer would have to spec into them. This created a Pay wall that some people either would have to pay to respec to enjoy it's benefits, or just not play PvP since the drains are just that strong. On the flip side, other builds became much more attractive that some people respeced into taking more advantage of it. The downside is clear to making changes to the game, It costs too much to keep up with it every time it's done.

Now I'm fully aware that this is a service you guys charge for. I can not immediately expect to tell you how much this will cost you in lost revenue. However for this game to flourish, it needs to be addressed. You have a pretty rich (in content) Zen store currently, I'm sure as time passes more people will be more obliged to buy more services, different ships, and more slots for everything to get more out of their exotic weird builds. I do believe in the long run a change such as this will bring more enjoyment to the player, and that will make other parts of the store and game shine.

Thanks.
-Hornet.

i think they should make it so when you hit level 50 you can max out all skills. that way every level 50 char will be the same..

Yes, let's not have any meaningful decisions in character development, and be able to swap skills at a moment's notice without penalty.

I don't care how long you've been playing. I only care about how you play.
And remember to follow the rules.

You really think they'll allow some sort of unlimited respec when they're currently selling respec tokens for 500z a pop?

Why in the world world would they give up a source of income? Just because some people don't feel like buy them, but want to use them anyway? Just because you think doing so will bring more people in and they'll make up the money elsewhere?

There is no way in this world you'll see a major increase in players in this MMO, just because they're offering free unlimited respec's. The only thing this would do, is cause a hit in the bottom line.

I agree to the OP, respec "tokens" are a disgrace and limiting. In the end they might cost them more players than they make them cash.

The other problem, beside loss of revenue, as arrons8 pointed out, is that once you start letting players respec characters at a whim, all characters at the highly levels would be interchangeable, and there would be little to nothing separating one player's Tactical captain, as an example, from another's.

Putting a respec token in place (earned or purchased) is a way of forcing players to make educated decisions about their characters' builds, and to ensure that characters are built with strengths and weaknesses.

And if the developers change a system or part that might impact players' builds, they could always hand out a free respec token per character when the patch goes live, to ensure that players continue to make educated decisions about their characters' builds without compromising the system altogether.

And if you don't like purchasing them, we could always go back to the old system, whereas you only get X number of respecs for the life of the character, ever. At least with the Dilitium Exchange, one can always make Dilithium, convert to Zen, and buy extra tokens to one's heart's content.

I don't care how long you've been playing. I only care about how you play.

I think subscribers should get a free respec token every month. Why not? They are paying into the game, and sweetening the subscription bonuses a little bit might encourage more people to subscribe!

Free to Players should be send down a creek with no respec tokens, oh and no paddle either.

It's funny you should say that because I have spent 3 or 4 tokens since the PSW nerf and I haven't been reimbursed at all.

I'm happy with my current build... until they nerf Sci again. How long do you think I have? A month? Two maybe?

I agree, as a gamer I think respec's should be limited. IMO CoH had the best system for it. A somewhat lengthy, 8 person semi-difficult mission that gave you one respec token.

In that game people actually put some though into their builds, and didn't change them at a whim. So many games make it far to easy to change your build at is. In STO you get 6 Fed side, 3 KDF side, if your gold just from leveling up. There's almost no way you can convince me that you need more the 6 respec's over the life of your character.

So no, making the respec's free... You might as well let everyone max out every skill in the game and remove any pretense at having to pick how they want to build their character.

But even at that, the money issue is more then enough reason to not do this. I'm sure that PWE/Cryptic make a ton of money off respec tokens, every other game I've played with them has.

Well... I did. But I learn from making mistakes. Many, many mistakes.
