Okay, so I've got two characters running at the minute, one is a Human Tactical Officer (Teamwork, Lucky, Leadership, Accurate) and the other is an Andorian Engineering Officer (Acute Senses, Aggressive, Elusive, Techie) and they're both focused within their respective careers; ie, my Tactical character is only going to be flying Escorts, my Engineering character will only be flying Cruisers. I've got my Boffs (+2) set up in such a way that I can rotate between both tier #5 ships for each respective character.
Currently, I only have one Tier #5 ship per character. I'm working on Dilithium grinding for the other two.
Obviously my Escort (Patrol Escort) is built for Offence. I'm currently using Tetryon Weaponry (Fore = x2 Single Cannons, x1 Dual Heavy Cannon, x1 Dual Beam Bank. Aft = x2 Turrets, x1 Transphasic Mine Launcher). My Cruiser (Star Cruiser) is currently loaded with x6 beams (x3 fore, x3 aft) along with a torpedo launcher (Transphasic) again, one fore, one aft. Beam weapons are Polaron. There was someone in game chat yesterday saying that Cruisers should be armed up with Cannons and Turrets, but realistically, considering how slow these things turn, I can't see cannons being at all practical.
What I'm specifically interested in knowing though is what I should have my character skills set too. Currently, mine are set up as follows:
Starship Attack Patterns = 6
Starship Weapon Training = 9
Starship Energy Weapons = 9
Starship Projectile Weapons = 3
Starship Maneuvers = 6
Starship Targeting Systems = 7
It would be good to know what boffs you're running on both ships so people can see if the skill you have relate to the boffs you're running, example - I see your engineer has 5 points attack patterns and you fly a star cruiser as an engineer so unless you have an attack pattern in your Lt tac slot, that's wasted SP.
On the subject of cannons, very few cruisers can make them work without the tactical boffs to support them such as the excelsior or regent assault cruiser to name two.
Man is a gaming animal. He must always be trying to get the better in something or other.
Warning, this poster tends to talk nonsensically when caffine levels fall below 80%.

My Bridge Officers are set up so that I can rotate them between the two/four Tier #5 ships. I don't own any C-Store ships (nor will I ever own one). Such is the example that when I'm flying a Blockade Escort I'm using cannons and beams so I'll use my Tac #1 & Tac #3 Officers. When I'm in my Advanced Escort (which will be more torpedo focused than cannons) I'll be using my Tac #1 & Tac #2.
Edit: Whilst I am likely to alternate between the two Tier #5 Escorts, I can't say I'm so much a fan of the Star Cruiser, so am likely to be using the Assault Cruiser as standard.
