Well best advice is bookmark
http://www.stowiki.org/ which has the accumulated wisdom and information of the players. And the second bit of asdvice is more about the meta-game of the game. The game has two distinct play modes, first is ground which is your Captain and yoru away team in the forms of 2-5 Bridge Officers. Their professions and skills (like player Kits) mirror your own. And they will need decent equipment and comsumables like you do don't neglect them.
And the other mode is space. You haven't reached the diverge point yet. But eventually, you'll have a choice of 3 different types of ships (a couple of as you reach max level or playing the KDF): Escort (DPS, fast, but fragile), Cruiser (OK DPS but strong defenes eand healing) and Science Vessels (least DPS, strongest shields but have buffs/debuffs, heals and crowd control). You ship choice is 2/3s of what you do in space. And you Captain is the other 1/3. You are NOT forced into taking a ship which matches your Captain's profession (i.e. Tactical Captain and Escorts). There is good synergy when you do so. But any combination of Captain and Ship works. Each combo has a different and unique play style. Trust me, I have a max level character of each combo.
Also free free to experiment with different weapons and abilities. And you can also do the same for your Bridge Officers abilities. (Although Expertise points may be in short supply until you reach Commander/Captain). There really is no "The only way" to play the game. Even is your get into ships and build which run counter to the prevailing player wisdom, if you are hainv fun and are effective in the game. You are going it right.
Also have fun exploring the game. And you can avoid spending your Energy Credits, Dilihtium et. al. in outfitting yourself, ships and Bridge Officers. You'll get decent gear from the Episodic missions. And you can easily outfit your crew with drops from defeating enemies. Save up your pennies for when your reach max level. Then use your resources to get the good stuff.
