# 1 STF PUG 'commanders'
09-08-2012, 08:40 PM
So after taking off from STFs for a while to do some starbasing, I've decided that I would rather play for fun in PUG-world than toil away in the farmlands.

The past few days I've been back to the STFs, and boy did I miss them. There is one thing that seems a little different than the Pre-Season 6 STFs. It seems like we are missing a lot of the seasoned players who used to manage the mobs. You know, back in the olden days, the guy giving directions on what we should be doing and not doing, well after the match I would check the dps long and usually he was the top shooter/healer or second. Skilled enough that I always felt comfortable when someone started telling the group what to do, that it was probably best to shut up and toe the line.

The past few days though, ummm, not so much. Starting to see more and more these folks with heinous configurations demanding that they are the experts. Then after the match I check their dps's and more often than not they are down around 11-1200. I swear one 'expert' was slogging along at 700 and didn't have the decent out hps to call himself a healer.

So please, please, to all the people thinking that now is the time to take charge of running a PUG, for the sake of not making yourself out to be a dufus, if you are going to play expert in the STFs, make sure you have the ship, equipment and skills to back up your expertise.

FYI CombatLogParser is a free download and is simple to use.

the main issue is they do private so we have to suffer

if you were a newb before you got fleet ship of gear you still suck if you don't know what to do

Right there with you. It't been about 6 months since I finally started doing elites, I have tons of Prototype Shields and Prototype Deflectors, but not one Prototype Engine from Cure. Every ship I have has Borg MK XII weapons, shields and deflectors and every one of them has a MK XI engine. And right at this second I have about 29 prototype salvage because I know that as soon as I get rid of them for dilithium, Cryptic is going to finally cave and let us use salvage to buy the engine. Sigh. I did all the 'magic'. Don't pick up any other loot, don't complete the optional, pick need on every piece of loot, complete the optional, mix and match all of those. Still no engine for me. At this point when I get it I'm going to be like one of those people who you read about who drop dead after playing a game. Except for me it will be out of pure shock when I finally a full MK XII borg set.

DPS is not everything. Parsers can provide inaccurate data too.

A simple matter is if the person is in an escort and does not dps then yes, by all means, he fails at his role. If he's in a science ship do not expect 'healing' or 'dps'... most sci ships nowadays are exclusively crowd control since its basically the only sci abilities left that sort of work.

Cruisers... well, cruisers are always a joke unless they do have threat control and know how to hold aggro.

The bulk of failed pugs comes from clueless people in cruisers thinking they are escorts ...that cannot tank, fire forward guns (raindbow ship) only and die nonstop the moment a single sphere gives them a dirty look.

Sure a DPS meter might be off by a point or 10. But not a five hundred to a thousand. When you are comparing two weapons and one is doing 870 and the other is doing 860. Well it's a toss up. But when your meter says the average DPS for a team was 1700 and DeathStrikerEvilNinjaAssassin19 was doing 800. Well, he is just bad, no way to blame that on a 'parser error'.

I would beg to differ on DPS not being everything in STFs. I would rather have another escort that can blast a warship to pieces every 20 seconds in Cure on my team.

In space, almost all of the players I team up with can't even figure out how to rebalance their shields.

You have tacs who don't carry tac team. Just awful singleplayer PvE builds that make it a necessity to waste every heal I have on them.

If they would put a little bit of effort on learning what builds are effective, PvP subforums are a treasure trove of supertight info on builds and general game mechanics, they wouldn't struggle in so many STFs.

Keep in mind this is on normal mode too. I don't want to imagine how badly they would perform on elite STFs.

STF and all missions dmg based.

most players ignore to run on full weapon energy in this missions for any reason thats why it will be always how it is.

learn to handle anythink solo in stfs is the best way so you can sometimes protect a near destroyed mission.

a cruiser Without threat control acts like a stronger slower escort (higher damage resistance )

And dps reports can be HUGELY wrong
we once had someone claiming that between 4 of us we did less damage than his escort (mathmatically impossible )
Actually we were doing between us pretty much all the damage
and he was flying in circles round kang

so as he NEVER left Kang
we must have done all the other damage yes?
(oh and we did get the optional on that occasion)

Most experienced players know better than to pug. They play with fleet mates, or meet people on chat channels, for private events.

While I wouldn't say DPS is everything it does seem to be for STFs, especially for optionals. I think it is also fair to say their are a large number of players that are just having fun, don't know what a parser is and don't know why rainbows aren't actually pretty. They may fancy themselves as experts because they've muddled through for a while. But, at the same time all of that makes an experienced player (and forum reader) scream. They may be having fun, but it wouldn't be fun for me. I wouldn't want to play with them- which is why I don't.

All the good players joined Fleets and stopped pugging. Simple as that.
