Hello. I just started the game and am confused beyond imagination as to how to build my engineer and was hoping for some help if at all possible. I have tried looking up guides and other such things but it actually just confuses me more at the moment unfortunatly. I have questions like:

What should my team of BOFFs consist of? (What clases?)

What ship is best for an engineer?

I am wanting to go tank as I have never tried that in an mmo before. I am still in the starter ship. Is that the reason I can't maintain aggro?

Lastly any build advice would be much appreciated. I am stumped on where to allocate points into my skills so any advice or, hell, if anybody has a useful build link would be awesome.

Any help will be much appreciated

STO Wiki page, this will hopefully help.

I would suggest getting through Lieutenant and into Lieutenant Commander before really worrying about you're skill tree. "removed free respec tokens through leveling because it is for gold members prescribing to play"
when you reach Lieutenant Commander you'll be able to select your first choice of three ships, each are class specific. Escort(tactical), Cruiser(engineer), Science (science ). being an Engineer you'll best suit the Cruiser

You should really have an even ammount of bridge officers atleast at first have one of each, Engineer, Science and Tactical.

I'd suggest just roaming through the game for a bit and exploring the User Interfaces and gaining your own grasp of it. you'll develop and build your own style, there are specific styles of play but you don't have to worry about them just yet.

have fun in game and try not to get too confused we all start off confused

Currently, you only get respec tokens if you are a subscription member. Players that play for free do not get these tokens for free.

As you level through Lieutenant, LT Commander, Commander, Captain, Rear Admiral Lower Half + Upper Half, Vice Admiral. you gain respec tokens so making mistakes in placing your skills is ok as you can fix any skills you want to change later on.

This with the caveat that you get the respec tokens only if your a subscriber.
Also http://www.stowiki.org/Main_Page is a good source of general information altho some of it can be out of date so take it as it is.
And http://www.stoacademy.com/ is another great source of info, also includes a skill planner so you can fiddle with you powers first then post them for feedback if you wish.

First Off. Welcome to the universe.
It gets less confusing as time goes on.

(1) Boff team : Make sure that you have the proper Boffs for the shipboard stations. Look forward at the ships you will be getting by talking to the ship requisitons officer. Plan ahead. Otherwise , try them all out. See what you like.

(2) Best Ship for any class is the one you decide you want to fly, but as you stated that you want to be a Tank. I suggest figuring out Cruisers. Engineers are great in cruisers.

(3) To maintain aggro, as you level look into the skill tree , one at level like 4 or so is called Threat Control or something similar. It is an important skill for those who are tanking. Take that threat away from the little squishy escorts.

(4) Unless going fast in sector space is important to you, which it shouldn't be unless you are doing Tour the Galaxy at max level, do not invest in Driver Coil. I became a much happier player once i figured that one out.

So far as builds, I suggest as rachelj88 says , just dont even worry about it till you are nearing LCdr. Explore the game and see what you like. Most things have a description available In game.

There are builds out there to be found.

To answer your first question, by the time you reach vice admiral (level 50), you will have six bridge officer slots. Personally, I think that two of each bridge officer type works quite well. Cruisers are ideal for the engineering class. If you are going to tank, this class is ideal. As far as skills go, it really depends on what ship you wish to go with at level 50. If I know that, then I can help you plan your skill layout.

Ah but in this case the letter also serves as a proper name, a title, and the name of a species. so it is in fact a word like a or I.

Thanks for all the advise and responses. That star trek acadamy website with the build tool is great because it allowed me to plan ahead and kind of map out and just sort of see what is available at end game. I'm of course not making a build now and strictly sticking to it. Just mostly "mapping" something out and will adjust as I see fit with the respec tokens I get from subbing. Thanks again for the responses. seems like there is a great community here.

My personal preference is one science (for healing), one engineer (for shield heals and fabrication) and two tacticals (for damage).

Technically a cruiser since they compliment each others tanking abilities. However, outside of PvP tanking isn't all that important, meaning the highest damage dealing ship class is the best, which is the escort class.

However since you want to focus on tanking - cruiser.

Hmm lets see:-
* Don't mix energy weapon types as specific energy weapon type boosting consoles are better then ones that boost all equally.
* Once you reach vice admiral, get field generator consoles as they boost your shield cap.
* The best set combination at end game is the Borg deflector, Borg engine, Borg console and MACO shields. A 3-piece borg set gives you a chance to heal hull AND shields upon damage being taken.
* Best weapons in the game are dual heavy cannons. Dual cannons may look as good, if not better, but general concensus is that they aren't as good as DHC's. For the most part on the Fed side, only escorts can equip them (the starter ship can as well).
* The tactical team tactical boff skill is a powerful tanking ability that quickly auto-redistributes your shields, diverting shield strength to the facing being attacked. Essentially it quadruples a shield facings HP.
* Torpedoes aren't that great, especially for an engineer in a cruiser at higher levels. It seems that torps of higher marks don't get as much of a increase in damage as normal energy weapons do.
* 2x emergency power to shields is great for shield tanking.
* Active space doffs can really help in both tanking and damage dealing.
