Well with the new ships about to hit live im seeing more love every day for escorts/destroyers and science vessels, cruisers somehow are falling to the edge of the oblivion, why? just take a look at new ships, the shield modifier ratio between ships don?t follows a linear progression at all, how come that science vessels have almost 50% more shields than a cruiser, while cruisers only have almost 1% more shields than a escort/destroyer? this is somehow irrealistic.

Also there is another matter here how come that new destroyers are going to have universal lieutenant commanders, do the devs have any idea how powerfull such a ship can be?

To add more spice since todays patch feds escorts are going to have inproved turn rate at 1, seriously? i mean comone give them another console slot lol and make them gods of the space, because that is what you are doing.

Don?t ge me wrong i have all kind of ships all are fun but i have a engi that flys a science vessel used to fly cruisers but pretty much they are useless i can add much more to the group as a science vessel than flying a cruiser, and now with the new ships ill be flying a destroyer i guess coz it have a good punch while can stand longer in any situation.


Putting al this together reasures me about the state of game balance that is getting worst every move devs are doing, sure its giving money but which is the price?.

I do agree on that cruisers are rather shafted in the form of shields compared to the much smaller escorts and destroyers. Ships only a fraction of the size of some cruisers having roughly the same shields.

I would like to fix the point you have, that I left in the quote though. From today's patch notes:

"Increased the turn rate of the Aquarius by 1.
Increased the Turn rate of the Escort, Escort Refit, Escort Retrofit and Fleet Escort Retrofit by 1."

That only affected the turn rates of the Aquarius, the original Lt. Cmdr escort (and Gladius refit), along with the two fleet-level versions, the retrofit, and fleet retrofit.

It didn't affect all fed escorts, only those. So I don't think that's hurting anything too much since they are VERY small ships.

Anywho, I will say that these new destroyers are pretty much the 'new' bugship. The two universal slots, letting you run it how you wanna run it will make a LOT of powerful builds. Lt. Cmdr universals means you can have any 'big' ability on that level of any class, like Gravity well 1, or Torp spread 3, etc etc.

But to be fair, we did have the Odyssey and Bortas packs, so it isn't like we don't have cruisers with pretty much the same, so now there are sci and escort ships with this as well.

Cruisers get no love in this game. Turn rate (for Fed) stinks, shield strength relative to scorts is too low, dps isn't even discussed anymore, and tanking can be done just as well by scorts (pve). I love cruisers, the chance to fly one was what got me to buy the game (I'm a lifer). But all I need do is fly a few dailies in my Tac Escort and the difference is so pronounceable that all I can do is shake my head and wonder what is going through the minds of the people at Cryptic. They're good ppl and make a great product, they're smart and can see what's going on. I just don't understand how this situation can last so long and not even be discussed as an issue by them. Please help me not lose the love of this game by turning it into tac escort only.

The reasons for all these are quite simple:

Cruisers are meant as hull tankers. If you gave them more shields than science ships, they'd be nye on impenetrable. Science ships on the other hand need that high shield strength, because their hulls are wafer thin. Escorts get a moderate amount of both, simply because they're fast and have a high defense rating.

Universal lt. commander slots are nothing new, we've had that since the oddy's, and in the tholian recluse carrier, there's a universal commander slot. Talk about some overpower. Not really though, since they're so slow.

Only the aquarius and escort/fleet escort and their retrofit versions get improvements to turn rate, and they needed that, since they were under-powered already.

Cruisers are hardly underpowered. I fly them frequently, and I find that their tanks are so much fun, especially when a group of ten players can't bring you down.

I do think the timeship destroyers should have the 0.8 shield number rather than the 1.05. Find of showing how unbalanced this game has gotten thanks to the Lock Box fluff.

i can understand the love for cruisers, since they are iconic. But in this game they are the tank, not the DD.

there are some really good hybrid cruisers...d'kora, vor'cha...those can equip dual cannons with an adequat turnrate to make them count.
If you have no access to those ships, use escorts if you see yourself in the DD role. Some tanky escorts are out there aswell.

i'm sorry that the game does not provide more variety in ship selection, but thats how it is and was since nearly 3 years now.

Also consider that more than 50% (possibly more) of the performance is the captain...not the ship.
