What do you use to record and edit? Is it there one method that's better for the inexperienced user?
I purchased a copy of fraps. Well worth what they charge for it. Just reviewing your own play goes a long way towards helping you in any game.
I use windows live movie maker. It is a free download.
Fraps files can be huge. Many huge files do NOT play well with movie maker. Start smaller.
Save your project OFTEN. I use 2 saves. Seriously there is nothing worse than losing hours of work because you didn't save. There is an undo function, but sometimes it just isn't robust enough.
When you first start up movie maker you will see that videos you load display as a sort of 'film track' on the right hand side of the screen. You can size this so that one 'row' of film equals an approximate second count. I use about 20 seconds. This helps me to visualize how much time I have for captioning and handles at the start and end of each sequence.
Add in a title scene. You won't be typing in the title yet, but you need to KNOW what it will be. If you don't know what it will be stop now. Even an IDEA of what it will be is fine. Otherwise what is this video about? And don't say "PVP". This is what will give you the direction you need to actually edit the raw video.
Load the files in the order you intend them to be viewed.
Add in a credit scene.
Delete the captions for title and credit. (they come last)
Use edit to simply cut away the junk. Save about five seconds before, and after the 'action' shot to allow for transitions. Handles, if you care to call them such. If at all possible try to keep all the scenes of equal length. If a scene is longer, just chop it up.
Look at the run time of your video. If it isn't under 15 minutes, go back and make it so.
Go to the first video scene after the title and add a transition. Pick ONE and just apply it to all your clips. Pick one that is easy on the eyes.
Add MUSIC. If you are using multiple tracks start at the beginning and work to the end. There are music tools for fade in, fade out, volume, and set end. USE them. You will need fade out if You use more than one score. Normally you wouldn't need fade in unless you were starting from the middle of a recording.
Now add your captions. Each scene should have one. 7 seconds is a good time for two lines of text. Standouts or exclamations can of course be less, or More depending on what you are trying to communicate. If you can't think of something to say, guess what? You must not need that scene. Try not to cover up what you are trying to show. Harder than it sounds.
That is it. Review it for errors. Save it as a movie. Upload it as private. Review the playback. Check all the settings and info. Change status to Public.
Oh. If you DON"T do it in the above order, you will find that nothing is where u put it. If you add captions and then try to transition it all the captions move out of position. Etc, Etc.
yah. long post. but thought some tips might help.
EDIT: after posting this and reviewing it for clarity, i thought to myself...."self, making videos, piece of cake"
