It actually could be. But Cryptic should have handled it better (which almost goes without saying for Cryptic).

They should have either announced this much earlier, and handed out a few minor trinkets to keep the natives happy (a title for old school vets, maybe some Dilithium Ore, a handful of lockbox keys and, say, a couple Very Rare Items or DOffs). or waited a while past the actual 1000 Day mark... like at the 1100 Day mark, giving the old schoolers 100 Days of exclusive access to the cherry on top of the sundae. Or that and the trinkets.

They did none of that. Thus there will, as usual, be ill will which Cryptic should have foreseen (since as usual it was blindingly obvious), could have prevented, and absolutely earned...

... Hell, look at Geko's Twitter comment from yesterday...

So which is it ?
If the subs were the money maker, then we would not have F2P, and its pretty much known, lock boxes and C store is how money comes in most.

Cryptic keeps making something signature worthy almost everyday now, I 'm taking a break

I thought about LTS last week, when talk of the 1000 rewards were hot. i then looked up all the rewards for each achievement . i decided not to get a LTS because of the length it would take to get some of the perks.
today i find out i dont have to wait.
i will now get a LTS.
thats a win. but i understand how annoyed some people will be.
i dont think i have earnt the right to the special veteran title. im not a veteran in my mind.
so i will not be using the title.

And how do those maths work out as a Win/Win ?

There were folks who subbed close to 1000 days and they gave Cryptic $800+ , just by their sub .
Now Cryptic is selling the same "game time / experience" for $200-300 .

Sure it might be worth it for the player , but is it worth it to Cryptic ?
Not to mention , how many subbers are thinking : "well now I don't have to pay any more !" .
Do you know how wrong that is (unless you treat STO like a second job) ?

Its simple....LTS and rewards are dumb.......but wait.......now i can get access to all the rewards without waiting i will spend money getting access to the very thing i deemed unimportant to others.

See easy. lol

I can't really guess what are Cryptic financial costs/gains with that whole deal.

However, from the player's side, the deal and the math is very simple. If you plan to keep a Gold subscription going for at least 12 more months then BUY a Lifetime Sub because you LOSE nothing and not only will win over time but also get immediate access to lot of freebies you would not get for free with a Gold sub.

If you're looking for the ship... might want to wait on that...

They are not a Fail concept , they are a concept that worked very well in Subsibcription MMO's , by essentially turning LTS subscribers into walking billboards of coolness -- or to be more precise , walking advertisments for LTS sales .

from which most new and even old MMOs are slowly retiring from.
There is such a thing as "retiring gracefully" .
This is not it .
In STO we has less then 24 hours to celebrate the LTS 1000 day vet award , before we were told that it was also going on sale .
That's akin to going to your last day at work only to find the new guy with his feet on your desk and your stuff in a box in a corner with the sign "for sale" on top of your box .

Does that sound graceful to you ? Or even remotely respectful ?

1 ) As MMOs gets older, the path to the highest Reward gets ridiculously far away and often potential subscribers will even wonder if the game still be there for them to achieve it.
Not in this MMO .
In this MMO EVERYTHING is for sale .
Tell me , will you feel bad when Starbases will be up for sale ? (or quick ways to get to certain Tiers)
Will that not somehow invalidate the effort you put into yours ?
Will it not cheapen your efforts (?) and in some cases , if you've turned Zen to Dill to support your Starbase , will that not cheapen that as well .

2 ) Players tend to expect always better and better perk/reward as they achieve higher milestones.
Not all players .
For me the height of the perks were the "fireworks" in space , and the basic (and flawed) Borg look that LTS's got from the get go .
Many players expected the 1000 day Vet award to be a new skin material or a reskin of an old ship or an old ship w/new stats .

We had to be assured that we were in fact getting a new ship (because we didn't believe that we were) .
Recently we were even assured that the new ship will not be going to the C-Store .
I guess we didn't ask the right question there , did we ?

Quote:
The problem is that most often, there is only a handful of really dedicated players left that will actually grab the highest reward.
I'm not sure what to say to that .
All I know is that from my POV , they could have stopped with the Vet award at 1000 days .
It would have been nice if I didn't get the feeling like they needed to cash in on my award Right Away .
3-6 months from now . ok . That would have been a cool time to announce the restructure/elimination of the Vet awards .
Right now ? Not so much .
This is more akin to bringing out the first lockboxes at last x-mas . Sure it was fun for some , but it ruined the holiday experience for many others .

Something has been taken away from me that was not
part of the deal when I bought my LTS back those days
- the fun of waiting and patience.

This is not about new lifers getting the veteran stuff -
they pay, they may enjoy!

Just a few days ago I reached 900 days and I was sooo
happy to now wear my jupiter uniform with gold shoulder
parts. I looked into it every day to see when it's gonna
happen..a feeling like xmas in my childhood - that gave
me something to do. Now this part of my gameplay died.

My suggestions are:

- set ALL accolade points for ALL players to max
- hand out all end level gear to all players without one successfull STF
- merge KDF and FED into one big faction so you don't have to care about PvP anymore
- remove all cstore items and integrate them into the lockboxes, also respec and such

Maybe then you devs have the game you dream about!

Hyperbole much?

Look, i understand your point of view. I really do.

On the other hand i also understand that money talks. And i for one never had any problem, prejudice or bias against people that have money and that are willing to spend it to cut corners.

Anyone can earn money and anyone is free to spend it on things they want and feel are important to them. People spend awful lot of time to achieve things in a way they won't have to open their purse. And there are these people who prefer instead to earn real money and then throw it into a game for insta-gratification. To me, it is all the same. These are both valid options opened to anyone.

Now, there is the "time" issue i can understand about Lifers that signed years early and are now feeling not acknowledged by the Dev team. I could get behind giving these old lifers a special title so that they can still "show" their "epeen" to others.

But other than that, i perfectly understand why Cryptic is doing what they do. It all makes lot of sense to me.

Hear, hear.

I have the same feeling.
I understand that Cryptic/Perfect World really wants us to assimilate the community into nameless mind slaves with equal 'rights'.
I'd say take soldiers Congressional Medal of Honor, and distribute it to them all. Give them the option to recieve the Purple heart to. Just make sure that they shoot their foot first.
Usually (imho) an mmo used to be the continuous grind/kill x beast, to finally get some kind of cool bragging-right inducing item of some sort.

What are we supposed to grind for now, then? Uhmm, Dil? To waste on the starbase?!?!!!
I am really lacking an incentive to continue this game. Have Cryptic/Perfect World just cutthroathed the whole game? -Releasing the Veteran Awards (and titles!!??!), and to top it off. Plainly distributing the complete OP-ship#1, the Chimera?! Let me guess, space will be littered with a prototype(!) ship, that happens to be flown by 'everybody'. Great move Cryptic. Honestly, I wouldn't have cried if I had to wait a 1000 days to actually get it. It would have given me a reason to farm dilithium to the otherwise less useful starbase. -Now? Pffh. We'll see.
