# 1 Making a Fleet: Group of 5?
10-05-2012, 02:12 PM
Why do you need to be in a full group of 5 players to make a fleet?

You guys do realize this doesn't actually prevent anyone from making a fleet with one or two people in it, all it does is anger people by making them jump through unnecessary hoops.

This is, in my opinion, obsolete.

not really, because when they kick the 4 other starting players out the fleet should auto disband.

This absurd as it would make 5 players holding the entire Fleet ransom.

OP is right. The other day I founded a fleet and had to find 4 team members. I asked for help in the chat channels 5 times with a 40 - 60 second interval, yet somebody told me I had to shut up. Twice a player joined my team that already was in a fleet and asked me to join his fleet. The other team members told me they were asked to join his fleet to.

Nevertheless I found 4 nice people that helped me, so I have my fleet. The Zen store should sell an item, when you buy it you can create your fleet.

People might say fleets are group content, a one-person fleet doesn't belong in an MMO. Perhaps, neither should there be mega fleets of players that are just there for the advantages for being in a fleet and do not care anything about their fellow fleet members.

These type of fleets are a serious problem for small fleets that have the ambition to grow. Players that want their own, single player, fleet are no harm to the game and the community.

It should take 5 people and some credits to make a fleet.

There should not be any other requirement or need.

As long as 1 member of fleet remains, the fleet should stay chartered.

Pay people enough EC and you can get almost anything you want, like say founding members of a private company that are fired upon the company's chartering.

Most MMO dont hide content behind a Guild-only door.

When Season 6 was still on talks I remember hearing about Public Fleets, that never materialized (small wonder, Fleets are just a sink with content locked so you have to farm and sink on it) and so STO does force joining a Fleet, if Season 7 is within the same line that Season 6 then you are really forced into one due to the Reputation system.

That leaves players with a "join or nothing", Fleets are even more aggressive to get new members because of the high costs that the sinks involve.

The fact is: fleets take up database space. The purpose of a fleet is for a group of players to form a sub community. If every player had his or her own fleet, it would increase database overhead per character exponentially. It's also the reason why a player has only a handful of character slots, given everything that is stored for single character (ships, BOffs, DOffs, inventory, bank, mail, mission logs, etc.).

If you are going to try to advance a starbase with one person, it would be so prodigiously slow as to be ineffectual. You'd be lucky to make SB Level 2 in a year solo, never mind trying to get a Tier 4 Shipyard to unlock certain ships, or ranking other tiers to open up starbase contacts & vendors.

And I've seen plenty of MMOs "hide content behind a guild-only door". DAoCamelot, EQ, EQ2, WoW, CoH, CO...

There are still plenty of fleets that will let you join them, asking little in return, and granting you access to all a starbase has to offer...

I don't care how long you've been playing. I only care about how you play.
And remember to follow the rules.

There is nothing wrong with a single person fleet. I got one just for more bank slots. A couple of my main toons are in a really large fleet, while the rest of my alts are in my fleet, which i use for storage. So in effect, its a way to have more bank slots without paying zen for them, and with account bank its easy to switch between my toons in another fleet, with ones in my fleet.

*couple points however..

I do not plan to build up my starbase..alone, thats crazy..

Being in a large fleet allows me to contribute, and share in its success.

*lastly..most people expect EC's to help someone make a fleet. Which i understand..i payed 500k per person when i made mine. Thats the best way to get new players an incentive to help.

I dont think there is anything wrong with the current 5 person team to make a fleet. sure its a hoop ya have to jump, but just deal with it and move on. The extra bank slots make it worth it alone..

Keep in mind, I don't want to be in a 1-man fleet. If that's your thing, go for it I say, but that's not my gripe.

Usually, Fleets start with an idea, that's all. Like, "Hey, I know what I'll do! I'll make a fleet called THIS, and it'll be all about THIS, and people will want to join because of THIS!"

Thing is, see, the game wants you to find four other like-minded people before you can even get started! Depending on what you're looking for, that could be an overwhelming hurdle. If what you want is, say, a small fleet with a strong roleplaying core, finding the ten other people in the game who want that could take a very long time.

Your other option? Stand in ESD for hours on end spamming Zone asking, begging, or even bribing, for help in the creation of your Fleet for no reason other than the game demands that you do that. It's arbitrary. It serves no function but to frustrate and generate spam.

"Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery."
Winston Churchill

MMO's try to force Socialism on people.

If we must have Fleet status to partake of content, then there should be a simple, "I'm a Fleet" button.
If your post is anything like, "I have a sandwich so you can't be starving" it's time to rethink posting.
