^^^Anybody about on the old forums will tell you that from late 2010 right up untill the game went F2P, many people were asking about the game going F2P, and many were told it was safe under the subscription model and was under no threat of going FTP..........look were that got us. lol

Take from that what you will.

Many really funny comments in this thread.

You shouldn't worry about season 7, it's just a major patch number. But here is some food for thought if you like to speculate:

STO is almost running out of famous and interesting canon ships. Most of the well-known ones are already in the c-store. The lockbox ships can't be any random ship seen in the shows. It has to be related to a major faction or race; I'm not sure people would try to get a pakled ship for instance. They may have 10 lockboxes opportunities or so left. The devs can decide to raise the level cap to sell new ships, which means they can make some money for a few more months. But what could happen after that, when the IP is dried out of interesting content?

Well... TNG is still here... Just reruns...

By that comparison, STO has had it's season 7, 2 years ago, since pretty much everything is re-runs theese days.
My name may say "PWE member", but I will never be.

Chris from STOked claimed PWE bought STO, Champs, and Neverwinter for the tech as opposed to buying them with any serious thought of making a profit off them; hence, he claimed, the reason that since the PWE takeover was finalized, the only content updates we have really seen have been lockboxes and grind. He also claimed that STO is considered an 'R&D project only' per their most recent financial releases.

The season is just the patch number and has nothing to do with the shows.

I believe TNG set the pattern because the actors had a 6 year contract and some of them were interested in moving on, so they added one more season. This became the "standard" for DS9 and Voyager, but when Ent rolled around, due to numerous blunderings and the aftermath of Voyager, interest pretty much tanked, ergo ending it relatively early.

As per STO sticking around I think it's got staying power. I've heard fairly consistent doomsday reports during my time here. Clearly, none have panned out, at least not yet; the game still seems to be chugging along. I still hope that the lack of content is something that's still being addressed, and what we've seen so far is essentially the result of Atari's poor running of Cryptic in general combined with several other major bumps.

I will say that they ARE "running out" of ships, so I'm pretty sure they're working on other ways to monetize the game in the long term. That said, a Pakled ship might draw more attention than you'd think; I would bet a lot of people would have said 'who would want a Ferengi ship' in March, yet we have D'Koras going for obscene prices on the Exchange. (Besides, they are smart. They make things go.) I've wondered about this myself. And some of the things they've done to monetize the game will probably come around to bite them later.

I would not, personally, put too much faith in what one podcaster says; Chris did leave STOked, after all. While he might have "insider" information, he might not, as well, and even "insider" information may not be accurate. That said, he could be entirely accurate; there's no way to know at this time.

However, as I don't particularly want to get into doomsday speculation, and hope STO sticks around for a long time to come, I'll just end by saying that the run of the shows, the number of the "season" of the game, and the run of STO have nothing to do with one another, and ultimately no one here REALLY knows what's going on behind the scenes to a large extent, so basically all of this speculation is just that - speculation.

Of course it wouldn't stop the devs from referring to later patches as movies.

The IP will never run out of interesting content simply due to its nature. sure, they are going to have to create their own ships, their own uniforms at some point but they have been doing that since day 1 to a degree, so its not exactly like its going to be a problem and its not even a bad thing. new ships may not be iconic but they will still sell.

star trek has evolved for the last 4 decades because people kept making new ships and races.

Well continued lack of regular content that is not a lockbox since going F2P certainly makes it look like PW have no intrest in investing in this game....the longer this goes on the more it becomes apparent.

At this rate we might see a season 8 round about December 2013.....if we are lucky. lol

For Star Trek fans you guys are pretty clueless

The 1 reason that TNG ended in season 7 : Money!

The actors - particularly Patrick were asking for extreme amounts of money to carry it into an 8 season - he was entertaining movie offers and asking for millions per episode.

It was more profitable for them to just shut it down and run it in syndicated re-runs then to carry on with an 8th season

If the actors had gone with the same salary as before then season 8 of TNG would have been done.

It's always about money - story writers and producers can always come up with new stuff if they want to.

As with STO it's the same how long it lasts is due to 1 thing : money

F2P launched in jan, there was a FE series in feb, plus some smaller events in march and april, season 6 was in july, season season 7 is next month.

so with a 3-4 month gap between major updates, why exactly do you think season 8 will be over a year away?
