What do you think about him, the character? The first time I saw him was in one of the THG episodes and although I was entertained by it, I had mixed feelings about this character. He is more or less a god and turns Startrek from scifi into scifa, science-fantasy.
The ones that created this character, do they really like scifi? I see both genres, scifi and scifa, as very different.
Well he is not a god... We know that the Q have weaknesses that would allow even "mere mortals" to hurt them (indicated by Q/Quinn), and they can not really force anyone to feel diffrently (merely make them belive that they do), as seen in that episode "A real Q" or W/E it was called.
They also seem to fear, or at least respect the Borg.
The Q are a long lived race numbering in the low double figures
There is some (mostly fan fic) evidence to indicate that they may be all thats left of a species that "evolved" some binding themselves to machines and becoming "perfect" haha and some continuing in flesh and becoming like the organians an isolated creature (an energy being)
so the Borg and the Q come from the same core stock
Thats an interesting idea- not one I'm familiar with, though.
I always thought the Q were respectful of the Borg because they had some sort of limit on how much they could effect the universe. Obviously, something they wouldn't want to state in the presence of starfleet.
But if the borg ever became aware of the Q, they could find some way of entering the continuum. Such an endeavor would not stop until the Q were dead or they eliminated all the borg- neither acceptable answers.
So best to remain in a state where the borg don't feel threatened into action
