Why do I have a hard time believing this...?

Unless the game does something silly like call everyone not 1st or 2nd...3rd.

In rounds where i've joined late or had bad lag, I've come below third, you don't get a place count.

As someone who has had 1st, 2nd and 3rd places I can confirm there is nothing shady going on.

Miss the days when the scoreboard actually showed at the end of the round so you can see where you ranked...

Ive come in first a few times, so it is possible.

Not sure how though, if its pure dps, or getting all the objectives as it should be

If you want to test if you are right try holding back on your dps...

Personally giving away better items to the people I am playing with is just another brick in the wall for me.

Fleet mark projects are always filled up in my fleet plus I earn less dilithium then AND now I get to be told I missed out on and gave away gear to some random people, no thanks

I've made first place with my engineer in a Tac Ody, even generously healing others in range of me. Getting first place requires a combination of good firepower and tactics. Dying at all can hurt your chances for a high ranking.

As far as i am aware , it isnt based on pure dps , more on what objectives you go for , i.e in gorn minefield , are you mindlessly attacking everything that moves , or specifically targeting frigates / cruisers / attacking the dreadnought when thats the main goal

i run a support orientated vesta , which does nowhere near as much dps as dedicated dps escorts , and yet i can routinely get 2nd or 3rd by attacking the right targets

In space i'm often 2nd, sometimes 1st, and always first on ground.

In space, people often have poor builds. The starbase 24 is a huge dps race. If you're 3rd or worse it means your build isn't really good. And if you can't survive a dozen of mobs on ground FAs, well, you might have issues being first.

I'm pretty sure healing has something to do with ranking as well as Damage. in my Vesta I routinely get 3rd and I haven't set it up for Max DPS or anything. as i still use beam arrays in back for use of sub-system targetging mainly for weapons and shields.

Well I still find this questionable. I'm an eng in a tac odyssey beam boat. I have pretty good dps I guess...but I still find always ending up third suspect.
