# 1 New Sci Toon
12-16-2012, 01:28 AM
So I was going to be starting a new Sci toon, but since I am bored of fed crap, I was going to put it on the KDF side. I already have a general idea of how the KDF works, since I have a tac toon (love it btw), and I already know how to run engi. But science? It's already kind of a blank slate for me, and was that way on the fed side, so I turned that into a tac.

However, I am pretty determined to run a KDF sci toon, so I was wondering how I would do this. What ships I should use mostly. The ground crap I can figure out on my own, but I was kinda stuck between Battlecruisers and BoPs. But I just need help in general on this.

Thoughts?
It is said the best weapon is one that is never fired. I disagree. The best weapon is one you only have to fire... once.

For a full on sci experience, I'd definitely say go for the BoPs.

The Hegh'Ta has great potential for sci builds, because of it's versatility and the potential for a commander level sci boff. The best sci space skills for damage and control are at the higher levels, and a BoP delivers the goods.

I don't know what you're planning to do with it, of course, but an alpha strike with high level tac skills and sensor scan/subnuc can be pretty lethal, and grav welling a group from cloak to follow up with torp/cannon spread is fun too.

I'd say choose the BoP at lvl 40, and get the mirror Vor'Cha off the exchange, then you can cover both angles.

Just make sure to spec graviton & particle generators and, if planning to use viral matrix, subspace decompiler (I think).

Way back when I first leveled a KDF sci (Cardassian via "alien"), I leveled up in BoP's... as KDF didn't have actual science ships back then, except the Vo'quv.
Well, and the Varanus, but that was also for Brigadier General, and back then we started at lvl 5 or 6.

The last one I leveled (starting at lvl 20... or whatever it is now), I got the gorn "Phalanx" ship as soon as I could. Then the Draguas, then Varanus.
(but since I had another KDF in a Varanus, I shortly after got him a Vo'quv, which I've grown to love).

I guess it's like Clapton said...

Well, on KDF, the only true sci options are carriers or lockbox ships. Either that or the Breen, but that isn't exactly pure science. However, if you want to keep a cloak, your only option is gonna be BoPs.

Heretic send me a pm on what you intend to do with a KDF Science toon. I'll let you know if it will work or not. The general consensus that Science MUST use Science ships/abilities etc is just a downright lie and anyone that believes it is just an idiot.

I use Science heavily in case you haven't figured out.
KDF Future with Cryptic. Fact.

What Cryptic should consider before releasing anything.

I started my KDF Orion Sci with the express intention of optimizing for ground PvP as a medic... and sadly never followed through with it thus far. I've got respecs when I get around to it.

I've only ever flown BoP's with her... when I first created her, the Gorn ships were not an option. And frankly I don't want to put her in a Gorn ship anyway.

I like the fact that BoP's are very nimble ships, which is important for limited-arc Science abilities like subnuke. And the universal BOFF stations let you set up your BOFF powers in just about any combination you like. And of course there's the battle cloak. I really like the enhanced battle cloak on my B'rel

The disadvantage of the BoP IMO is that they're not well-suited for one of Science's strengths: being a healer. They're fragile enough that they can't easily survive a focused attack, and so they're not able to hang around and heal. Personally, I think their best role is a "Dirty Tricks" build with CC and debuffs.

I made the mistake of putting another KDF character (a Tac) in a battlecruiser and hated it. I can't imagine how much I would hate trying to play a KDF Sci in a battlecruiser, but I'd try to stick with Sci powers that are not arc-limited and useful for heals and buffs on your teammates. Less focus on CC.

Nobody said that Sci "MUST" use sci ships.

It's true that they DO play to a Sci capt's strength, like Tacs in Escorts, or Eng in Cruisers.
But the great thing about STO, is that we can all captain any type of ship we choose, as any combination can be viable... and in some cases, pretty downright surprising!

Also:
Let's keep the word 'idiot' out of our opinions, okay? It tends to rile people up, even when you're using it in a general sense.

The Phalanx, Draguas and Varanus aren't true sci options?

It so purely depends on what you want to do. Just for starts, realize that the only Sci Captain ability that you can enhance with skill points is sensor scan. Other than that they are what they are.

Sub Nuc comes out the sharp pointy end of your ship. If you think you'll be wanting to use that a lot, you'll need to learn how to point a ship.

A sci captains abilities brings some support, shield healing, damage mitigation, target buff stripping and debuffing. It plays well in any ship. Really it would be hard to screw up ship choice. Sci will bring something extra to any ship in the game.

Just being a sci captain doesn't doesn't make your bridge officer abilities any more effective. You need to spend your skill points to do that.

Anyhoo's a cruiser is a great choice for being able to take advantage of your sci captains abilities.

A Varanus or a carrier is a great choice for being able to use boff sci abilities.

A B'rel is a great choice for using sciencey magic in pvp. If you were a tac captain. I suppose. I have no real idea on that. It just looked good when I typed it.

Cheers happy flying!
