Reading up on this title, it sounds like he's either the final authority on all areas of the game's vision, from systems to content to monetization.

If I'm reading this right, the areas Stahl would be over would be more managing development schedules, labor budget, HR issues, and communication.

So if I understand this right... Geko is in charge of the vision and Dan handles the logistics of executing Geko's vision?
Geko is in charge of STO now? No wonder the game is going downhill. While I don't trust anything Dan says now. I got the feeling his goal was to make a fun "Trek" game. Geko seems to be only interested in squeezing every bit of monetization out of this game. This would explain the whole back and forth with dilithium that has gone on the past few weeks.

I'm not sure what happened to the old thread, where I asked if he was now Dan Stahl's boss or if he had an enhanced role in day-to-day management of the game now that he uses the title of "Principal Designer," which is generally a title where someone has ultimate control over the vision of a product.

But the thread has vanished.

I'd urge everyone to stay civil and mind the forum rules. I'm just curious. I've received messages from other players about the thread being missing and this has only served to prompt more discussion.

If anyone has links to tweets or recent interviews that shed light on the subject in a fact based manner, that would be appreciated.

I'm certain that a company like Cryptic, which has traditionally prided itself on transparency, SHOULDN'T object to a discussion of who's at the wheel, helming things like product vision, as long as it's a discussion rooted in facts and reasonable speculation.

Geko is STO's Lead Designer, as noted on all the blogs he writes. dStahl is Executive Producer, as noted on all the blogs he writes, and oversees the entire project and all developers working on it. From a recent interview:
Quote:
MMOBomb: Thank you Daniel Stahl for spending some time with us here at MMOBomb. Before we talk about Star Trek and some of the upcoming changes to the game, can you give us a little insight into what you do as the Executive Producer? What?s a day in your work life look like? It can?t all be fun and ?games?.

DSTAHL: An Executive Producer at Cryptic Studios is very similar to a Studio General Manager in that the role has overall responsibility of a development team working on a single video game title. As an executive business position, it includes managing both the revenue and cost elements when creating and operating an MMO. My days are a smorgasbord of design, personnel management, financial oversight, and decision making.

While working in the video games industry is a lot of fun, the EP is carries a lot of responsibility for effective plans, delegating, coordinating, staffing, organizing, and decisions to attain the continued financial success of the product, in this case Star Trek Online.
As for "Principal Designer", I believe that may be his official title. For instance, I'm our Community Manager, but if I had a LinkedIn, it would say "Community Management Specialist".

EDIT: Looks like the other thread was accidentally moved to the archived "Ten Forward", not the current one. I'll merge it with this one and put it in the right Ten Forward.

Cheers,

At this point, I think we all know who is at the helm of this ship....

Why is this in Ten Forward? It seems like the perfect discussion thread to me.

So inhumane superweapons, mass murder, and canon nonsense is okay, but speedos are too much for some people.

The OP, and most of the thread, is discussing someone's LinkedIn, semantics of a title name, and managerial hierarchy. I could see how the case could be made for it being a STO discussion, but I think the goal was to find out who is who's boss and what Geko's role is, to which I answered above. While game related, it's not about the game. 10F is not an off-topic forum specifically, so it fits best here.

Cheers,

I guess that makes sense enough. Very well. Carry on Flaky one.

My official title is "Executive Vice President of Triangles." But if you checked my LinkedIn page it would just say Environment Artist.

I see, so you would report directly to the "Senior Executive Vice President of Pomegranates" or would it be the "Chief Executive Officer of Saffron"?
