We have the Sector Defense instances in the game since launch.
They used to give mostly XP.
These days they are practically dead, and that includes the new Tau Dewa sector, which has such an instance to fight Tholians.
Outside of a source for kill accolades, they really are totally useless.
Would it be possible to give them some life back with a slight revamp?
Champions Online has a few area missions where you kill 100 or 200 or 1000 (not sure about the numbers) enemies to complete it.
Now, why not make a daily mission available for each race featured in such a Sector Defense which you can pick up in the appropriate sectors or by entering the instance?
As a reward i would suggest fleet marks, as there is a shortage of those atm.
So, you go into the Sector Defense instance of the Tholians and a mission pops up offering you 30 FM if you destroy 100 Tholian ships. Plus 10 FM if you manage to destroy the flagship.
With Klingons, Orions, Nausicans, Romulans, Remans, Hirogen, True Way, Terrans and Borg and the new arrivals Tholians, that could enable someone to get quite a nice sum of FMs per day, but it would also take a lot of time to do all of them to balance that out.
And it would give some old bit of content some relevance again.
In case of Borg and Romulan related factions the player could alternately get Reputation marks instead or simply choose which one he wants,

It would be great if they would somehow manage to include missions in this game which doesn't require you to blast the same 3 mobs of enemies over and over again to grind for stuff to buy a weapon with has a plus 5% damage modifier to kill the same three mobs of enemies slightly faster
For isntance: "Defend the Sector" could mean something along the lines of, well, DEFEND THE SECTOR instead of S&D dozens of enemy ships ALREADY in the sector. They could become missions with random objectives, i.e. defend an outpost, escort an convoy, evacuate/salvage an disabled ship, simply put all the police duty Starfleet is supposed to do instead of jumping into instances with infinite enemies to blast.
