# 1 Engineer class ok for Escorts?
12-15-2012, 08:37 AM
Ok, so with the eventual coming of the Andorian Escort, I thoiught I would make an Andorian Captain. Here is the thing, I have a Human Tactical Captain, and a Vulcan Science Captain. So I thought I would finish off the "Founders of the Federation" set (as it were) by making my Andorian an Engineer.

But I have never tried using an Engineer for an Escort ship (Since I would want my andorian to eventually fly the andorian ship), Usually I match ships with captains. Tac for Escorts, Sci for Sci, Engineers for Cruisers. I am wondering if my making my Andorian an Engineer I am unnecessarily handicaping him and it wouldn't be better to make him a Tactical Officer?

Getting your engi in a escort can be preferable sometimes as engies have a couple of character powers that an escort could use. Like Rotate Shield Frequency, EPS Power Transfer and Miracle Worker.

Sometimes I'm thinking of starting an Engi and get him in a Defiant and see how that works.

My main has been an Engineer in an Escort since Open Beta and then headstart.
Some PvPers told me that it doesn't work. But personally I find it a lot of fun.
Of course I can't do quite the burst a Tactical could, but in turn I get more surviabilty.
I find it works in PvP too, but maybe I just PUG too much, and am too used to the Fed cruisers whose motto seams to be, "Healing? What's that?"
In PvE it works just fine of course.

I admit that Engineer isn't the strongest class since it's buffs aren't team wide.
While Tactical DPS or Science debuff always helps everyone. Engineer can't even use his RSF on allies.
While it does mean I won't need many heals from anyone else, I think Engineer could use a buff.

But in the end, I still enjoy playing it, just because it's fun.

Right now, I'm working up a KDF engie in a BoP, and it seems to work out okay, I don't see why that wouldn't apply to a Fed Engie in an Escort, esp. since you have more to play with there in terms of shields, hull, and weapons. Just remember to slot good Bridge and Duty officers to either offset the loss of DPS compared to a Tactical, and look at how you can use your engineer abiliities for tactical advantage...

Some combos work better than others. But I've found that since the ability to equip cannons an the high turn rate of an escort means big DPS regardless, the Engineers heal powers works well with it. Same with Sciences debuffs.

Basically anything works in an escort.

For PvE I thinks is perfectly fine. I don't personally recommend it for PvP because your really hurting for a way to set up a kill (tac has alpha, sci has subnuke)

I'm an engineer and I've always flown escorts. I tried a cruiser once, but didn't care for it.
I don't PvP, but I've always done well in STFs.

I have an alt that's a tac in escorts. It always feels squishy. In STFs it helps if you can take a beating- not necessarily tank- and engineering abilities are good for that.

Engineers are actually pretty good in an Escort. Using Nadeon Inversion and EPS Power Transfer, you can crank out a surprising amount of DPS and STILL have a lot of power. Miracle Worker can give even the most fragile of glass cannons survivability. You'll only miss out on training in things like Cannon: Rapid Fire 3 and stuff, but a Tac player can train those for you.

Generally speaking, engineers can fly ANYTHING and still do a good job of it.

My main is an engineer flying a Qin Raptor. It's a very effective combo -- the ship design and boff layout deals the damage, while the career keep it intact. I can't tell you how many time Miracle Worker has saved my butt.

They can't use RSF on allies, but that can use EPS Power Transfer on allies: I call it power crack
