Ooh, hadn't thought of that.

Cumberbatch isn't a Vulcan (no pointed ears) but he might be a relative on Spock's Mom's side.

I swore I could remember a screen shot of Benedict that people were saying made him look like he had pointy ears. Him being Vulcan could also explain reports of him withstanding a Vulcan neck pinch.

And all that, "I have returned!" stuff, a reference to this, perhaps?

Around 2143, a group of these Vulcans left their homeworld aboard the starship Vahklas. The crew of Enterprise NX-01 encountered the Vahklas in 2151 while en route to the Arachnid Nebula. Their ship's captain, Tavin, requested some assistance in the repair of their propulsion and life support.

In truth, these Vulcans hadn't abandoned their logic but had simply learned to exist without the need to continually suppress their emotions. They still believed that logic was an essential part of Vulcan existence, but that it had to complement emotions, not exclude them. After eight years of experimentation, they claimed to have finally managed to find a balance between the two, through constant discipline and meditation. (ENT: "Fusion", "Stigma")

(The ideas of the V'tosh ka'tur apparently never caught on with the majority of Vulcans and it is unclear if their movement survived into the 23rd or 24th centuries, though Sybok presumably would be considered a V'tosh ka'tur. It is possible that their ideas were further discredited by the discovery of Surak's true teachings in the Kir'Shara.)
If he is Sybok, perhaps he is returning from some spiritual quest that has caused him to regain his emotional state. Vulcans are supposed to be incredibly strong, and capable of feats that would seem super-human. What stops them most of the time is their teachings on emotional control, but we've heard in the past that ancient Vulcans didn't have this, and nearly destroyed themselves because of it.

This character is why I don't play my Romulan any more. Tovan Khev is NOT my BFF! Get him off my bridge!

I have often thought that the TPD is actually a scam by a group of 24th century Grifters (conmen) with crude time travel

After all given a REAL fully functional timeship
Starfleet would ERASE the Borg from the timeline

Time travel is cheating. Starfleet doesn't like to cheat; that's why they created the TPD. Same with the Treaty of Algeron, where they agreed to not use cloaks.

See, I've watched the trailer and have another theory about something... the hands against glass at the end...
We see Kirk in a dark grey "uniform" in the few seconds before the hands moment in the trailer. It is the hand in the dark sleeve which is pressed against the glass already and Spock's(?) then moves to the opposite side of the glass.
What if it is the REVERSE of what we see in WoK?
Kirk is the one in the bad way and Spock is the one on the safe side of the glass?
Just a thought, just a thought...

Loving the Sybok idea, BTW, no reason why they could not be releasing trailers which have been touched up in some way to retain a sense of WTF!? in the film. Maybe his eyes WILL be silver, maybe his ears WILL be pointy...

It did sound like Pike in the voiceover. I suspect he will die in, or saving folk from, whatever nasty scheme Harrison cooks up to set himself up as the antagonist. This will also give his speech (presumably to Kirk) more weight and gravitas and reinforce the whole family thing, as Pike was a sort of father figure for Kirk, guiding and setting him straight in the first movie. He will lose another father figure. And his lack of humility means that the resolution to the whole affair will probably be Kirk's having to wholly and completely trust others, his new family - his crew, to get them out of the situation.
