# 1 Galactic Map Is Wrong
03-11-2010, 06:50 AM
Just curious, but...Why is the sol system the center of the galaxy in this map, klingon, and romulan space are in the alpha quadrant, but they have them in the beta quadrant. I know as far as what I have heard is the gamma, and delta quadrant will be added later. Is this just a "For now" map, or what..

Thanks.

Actually its not the center of the galaxy, its placed in the center of the section of the galaxy that we are looking at. I was a bit confused at first as well. This isn't the whole galaxy, just part of the the Alpha and Beta quadrants.

indeed a most of klingon and romulan space is in the beta quadrant thats why starfleet knows so little about it because they cannot go around the 2 empires and explore...

im pretty sure im right on this any care to help

I was confused by the map as well. The map shows the Federation in the Beta Quadrant. I always thought the UFP was in the Alpha Quadrant.

I have a really great 2D map on my laptop somewhere. I may post it later if I ever dig the thing out of the closet...

Here is a good resource with detailed information and various maps over various time periods: http://stdimension.org/int/Cartography/cartography.htm

Here's a Star Trek map, which shows how well the game map matches the Trek universe:

It's important to note that this entire map is contained in a small region of the galaxy.

The map is not wrong but is actually earth-centric. After first contact, humanity embraced space exploration and thus proceeded to section out the galaxy for navigational purposes. Anything "West" of the Sol system was deemed the Alpha Quadrant, and anything "East" was the Beta Quadrant.

Check out this fan map of the Alpha and Beta Quads:

OR: http://www.sttff.net/images/AST030.jpg

Or this one which is way cleaner full Galaxy Map:

It seems most canonical series were kept busy by the never ending politics of the Klingons and Romulans, so the focus was largely on the Beta Quad. DS9, however, pulled our attention to the Alpha Quad. which seems to contain more Federation members. Of course it also introduced us to a bit of the Gamma. We have ST:Voyager to thank for making the Delta Quad more than a "really distant place where the Borg come from".

So in the end, it's just us silly humans thinking we're in the centre of the universe (read: galaxy) again. What would be neat is if the Klingon faction had this going from Qo'nos, but that would be too complicated

These are IMHO the best maps out there and I was very glad to see Cryptic adopt them as their source material. They come from the STAR TREK STAR CHARTS by Geoffrey Mandel and were published by Pocket back in 2002 I believe.

Mandel essentially married real-world astronomy with star trek and mapped out the galaxy around us. They are very detailed and you'd be hard pressed to find fault with them as they chart virtually every major TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY and even season one of ENT.

Little things like Parliment and Beta Renner (fr TNG Lonely Among Us for example) are missing and of course the later additions from ENT like the Xindi expanse, but overall its a great collection.

Sadly there's never been a full fledged map version published and the pages from the book don't line up that well so there are always a few "spatial anomalies" in the scanned and photoshopped versions bouncing around the web...

It isn't - the map doesn't even show the whole galaxy - just selected parts of the alpha and beta quandrats (we'll ignore Gamma Orionis for now).

You read it wrong.

Not to mention that the Malon system should be in the Delta Quadrant and not near Bajor... but we'll let that slide i suppose.
