# 1 Next generation Excelsior
01-13-2013, 11:08 AM
I haven't looked at the forums much but I've noticed some talk here and there about the Ambassador class starship, now I will agree that I'd like to see the ship in Star Trek Online as we've seen many ships being brought in (Oberth, Nebula, Excelsior) I'd like to ask this question to get an opinion about the next generation of an old ship most of us love, the Excelsior.

True we have the Tier 3-5 Excelsior's which have two variants of the ship, the standard Excelsior as seen in Star Trek IV as well as Star Trek VI and many other TNG or DS9 episodes later, but as well as the Lakota variant (Enterprise-B), which was seen in Star Trek Generations and I believe a few TNG and DS9 episodes (correct me if I am wrong). Both starship variants have been seen through out the 23rd and 24th century. How ever in Star Trek Online we are in the 25th century, most ships now have different variants of each other that make themselves more appealing to the eye's of the player. Different variants of starships have been seen like the Excalibur (Constituation Variant), The Noble (Sovereign Variant) Vigilant (Defiant Variant) and so on and so forth. Most of these variants are a bit more modern base, as well as the many variants of the Akira.

There are many fan-base variants of the Excelsior to make it more modern/advance and I've been wondering on and off in the back of my head, why not bring a new variant of the Excelsior here in Star Trek Online? A new Variant would be good especially in the current era, the federation has made many advancements to other star ships, compared to model and equipment, I would think that a new variant of the Excelsior would be good to bring into the STO community since many others including my self also favor a ship like the Excelsior.

Along with this I'd like to ask what do people think about variant of bridges for the Excelsior, for the older ships I know I'd like the old bridges that have been seen in the movies of the Excelsior bridge, but of course I'd like to ask everybody what they think.

The Excelsior's been around on STO for a while as well as many other ships, the tier 5 Nebula has a variant that makes it more modern looking for the current era, I think it's about time the Excelsior has a variant of it's own, and I'd like others opinions on this as well.

My opinion on the Excel and most TOS ships:

Sufficed to say, I hold the excelsior under the same opinion and don't think it needs a new skin, just a new home.
It is said the best weapon is one that is never fired. I disagree. The best weapon is one you only have to fire... once.

I couldn't agree with you more Heretick. Can't stand the look of that ship and it's design is at least 100 years old. Time to give it a rest please.

The Fleet Excelsior is the best,

As much as I love that ship I don't think we need another variation of it.

Perhaps OP, but personally I love the Excelsior, it's by far the best Tac cruiser in the game unless the Fleet Sovvy is better but as that's a T5 ship i haven't seen anyone in one yet. I also like the surrent styling though, it is very distinctive as it is. Whilst Starfleet may upgrade a ship's systems to keep it current I doubt they would give it a new shape and new systems because if they did surely it would just be a new ship entirely?

I have the same feelings about the Excelsior... I love that ship and I would really like to see one 25th "centurized" However until recently I had no idea how small it really is at 469 meters.

For example, the Akira is 29 meters smaller and the Sovereign is 226 meters longer. When next to an Odyssey, the saucer seems to be the same length as the Excelsior. On the flip side, the Intrepid class is smaller than the Excelsior at 344 meters so it sort of makes my feeling moot.

I guess what I am trying to say is that if they do it... they need to come up with a good back story on why Starfleet would want to create a new cruiser that is half the size of the latest ones... Odyssey, Vesta, Regent.... and somehow be just as formidable (justify T5)

Maybe a small tough battle cruiser that is not intended for long range exploration or something... idk

Also, the Regent and it's BO layout seems really appealing to me...

725 x 102 (or current exchange rate) DL = 73950 DL <- can you earn that per hour in game?

THIS is what a future Excelsior should look like...

Props to the SFC3 modding community for coming up with this beauty.

I used to fly one back when I played the Generations at War mod. By far my favorite ship in the game - the classic cruiser design upgraded to 25th century specs.

Enjoy!

I know there are a lot of fans of this ship and it's great they have several very good to excellent versions of their favorite ship to fly; that being said I am at this point completely against any more reiterations of this ship.

We have a T3, T5 and a Fleet version of this ship already.

It's old, it does not fit even remotely with the visual thematic of the rest of the 2400s ships, and it has one of the best base turn rates on any Fed cruiser (Fleet heavy with old AC boff layout matches it) and the fleet version has inexplicably as much hull as the Fleet Star Cruiser & Assault Cruiser - once again disregarding any Turn vs. Hull disadvantage.

This ship has already been given the royal treatment, it's 2409 lets save the new unique and interesting BOFF layouts for new ships that will inevitably roll out over the next year.

Well, if you actually look at ship progression, the Sovereign class replaced the Excelsior as the Federation's combat cruiser, after the Galaxy class replaced it as the workhorse of the fleet. In essence, the Assault Cruiser is the next generation Excelsior designed without the dynamics needed for the failed Transwarp Drive.

The Sovereign was bigger, slightly less manueverable, but could be built with standard warp drives and was more nimble than the more-massive Galaxy class. This made them less costly to put into service and they filled the void that the losses of Excelsiors during the Borg and Dominion wars left in the fleet. Also, the Sovereigns didn't need the over-reinforced structures of the Excelsiors, saving some on materials.

It was only when the Transwarp Drive became a reality that the Excelsior class was brought back into limited construction, or mothballed hulls put back into service. Even then, the cost of those drives made mass production less attractive when the Sovereign class could do the same jobs in most cases with equal ability.

So I don't think we need a next-gen Excelsior. We already have it in the Sovereign and Regent classes, and have three classes of updated Excelsiors already.
