Still working out the stats, but what do you guys think? My original thought was for a drone that would repair hull damage, but as I thought about it, you could conceivably have a blue version that did hull repair only a blue version that did shield repair only, and then a purple version that did both? Maybe give them a limited defensive weapon capability?

This is the one thing that I have thought was missing from the Omega Force armory: Some form of hanger pet. There are enough fighters in the game that adding another one would not really add much to the game.

Or what about an Assimilated Marauding Force Hanger Pet? Make it able to farm the way that slavers do for the KDF. IDK, maybe that is a bad idea. The Klinks don't have a lot that is uniquely theirs.

Anyhow, let me hear your thoughts. What would you add to this? How would you spin it?

To be honest, we don't really need it. Both sides have hull and shield repair units. Even then, they aren't used all that often.

Wait, what? Both sides can use shield repair ships, but to my knowledge the only HULL-healing pet is exclusive to the Science Odyssey and its unique "Worker Bees" console.

Shield repair shuttles really don't make a noticeable improvement that I can tell. Add in the flakiness of trying to run these pets along with other pets, long cooldown and lack of survivability, and you're giving up a massive chunk of firepower for some very unreliable and minor healing.

Bad deal.

I use the shield repair units and find them very useful, though I do agree they're a bit on the weak side. They should at least be able to repair one another when I don't need them, like what the borg regeneration drones do, that way they might last a bit longer. I spent the Dilithium to get the reinforced drones but any decent torpedo salvo from an enemy will still crush them.

A combined shield and hull repair drone would be really nice though, but I've actually had an idea that could really distinguish it. What if it was a nanite "swarm"? Basically instead of launching individual drones you would create a single swarm of nanites that cling to the surface of your ship; these wouldn't be targetable on their own but area damage can deplete them, or even wipe them out if your shields are down. However, the swarm would gradually replenish itself. Launching more would instead simply provide a large heal to the existing swarm; a new swarm would only be created if the previous one was wiped out.

Instead of giving a single bonus the swarm would change behaviour by following carrier commands as follows:
  • Attack: Applies a small power drain to shields, engines and auxiliary power in order to provide a small boost to critical chance.
  • Escort: Provides small boosts to defence, stealth and counter-measures.
  • Intercept: Functions as an automated point-defence system, causing small amounts of damage to nearby projectiles and fighters, more useful against fewer targets.
  • Recall: Provides a boost to shield regeneration, and a small boost to hull repair. Also provides a small bonus to other nearby pets (useful for larger carriers).

Unlike shield repair drones and work bees so that their repair bonus is a lot stronger than what the swarm is capable of, since it's advantages should be in durability and flexibility. Also, unlike shield repair drones and work bees, a nanite swarm is unable to target friendly ships; it's only of use to your own ship and potentially pets that are currently around your ship.

The c-store varanus has a repair platform that they can deploy, friendly ships within range of it get several hull repairing drones that will follow them. A bit different from hangar bay as they don't directly launch them and friendly ships can just fly up to get their own little hull repairing drones spawn and follow them for that session/till they die.

Sorry, couldn't resist...

But seriously, I support any interesting elite hangar bay that doesn't require Tier 5 starbase...

I like the idea of the "Swarm" but I think that this would work better as a console, or maybe as a consumable. The Borg excelled at nano-tech. Use that as an advantage. If you wanted to create a offensive hangar pet, then make it something that uses Viral attacks and uses the kinetic beams. but I think the idea of a combined hull/shield repair drone pet, maybe that releases 3 at a time instead of 2, would be a great addition to the game.
