Being a Tac officer flying an escort, I realize I'm not going to be as good as other Tacs in Escorts simply because by purple gear is only Mk XI instead of XII...
But why is it that it seems as though AoE type attacks (1 v many), such as Cannon Scatter Volley and Torpedo Spread, seem to drop targets in an 1/8th of the time that Direct type attacks (1 v 1), such as Cannon Rapid Fire and Torpedo High Yield, do? Wouldn't you think it'd be the other way around? Concentrating your fire power into 1 target instead of distributing it amongst many??
AOE attacks do tend to deal a bit less damage but not by a significant magnitude. Likely what your seeing is when NPC ships explode they hurt the other ships around them sometimes a little sometimes alot creating a chain reaction of exploding NPCs so to speak.

Actually, no. There's been a few times (say for example Khitomer Vortex when multiple probes come out at once) that I've watch someone take out the whole group where they're all under 1/4 health by the time the first one actually dies (I have my HUD set to show the health bars of everything on damage).... If I happen to be fortunate and can activate all of my DPS abilities at the same time, and get in some good crit hits, I can usually take out 1 probe in that time. But not get the other 3+ down to 1/4 health. And I have Rapid Fire 3 and Torp High Yield 3.
That entire fight goes faster with CSV/TS, but I haven't noticed them destroy single targets faster compared to my CRF.
"Don't let them promote you. Don't let them transfer you. Don't let them do anything that takes you off the bridge of that ship, because while you're there... you can make a difference." - James T. Kirk
You need to do the math. You are probably assuming that if your cannons can do 10,000 points of damage, then if you fire at five targets, they each get 2000 points. Or you can put all 10,000 points on a single target.
But you're in a game where the weapon range of a 25th century, ship-borne weapon is... 10km. In other words, dump the 'real-word' comparisons when playing this game. There is no bullet drop, you cannot bank past 60 in space and when million ton spacecraft collide, you don't even get a dent. I can hear you scream in space and everybody, including the Borg agreed that 'up' would be 'that way' and 'down' would be 'this way'. Oh, and we all speak English (also german and french).
So it's a game and the devs can make the 'laws of reality' bend over like someone reaching for a bar of soap in a penitentiary.
Compare CSV1 to CRF1:
CSV1 adds 15% to your cannons damage and applies it to all targets in a cone-shaped area centered around your current target.
CRF1 adds 30% more damage, but only to your current target.
That is, my cannons normally do 10,000 damage and I then activate CSV1 and aim it at five targets, they EACH get hit for 11500 points. If I had used CRF1, then one target would have taken 13,000 points.
Think about it. Against five targets, CSV1 does 57,500 damage. CRF1 only does 13000.
So the next time, you hear someone saying they can do an average of 20k DPS in ISE... they may not be pulling your leg and you now know how.
PS Go to sector space (or go to 'orbit'). Tooltip a weapon (hover the mouse over the weapon in your HUD). See the DPS? Now remove a console. See the difference? So why do people pay absurdly for a purple Mk 12 console to replace that blue Mk 11, if you don't even get a 1% DPS difference? Because we CAN.
This will sound too simple, but the thing is too simple. Like in any other game, aoe is better agaist a group of enemies. Direct attacks works for a single boss type target.
I got the extra 2 boff slots from the c-store so I can, in Khitomer Vortex for example, use CSV and TS to kill probes/spheres/generators and then, at the end, switch my boffs so I use CRF and torpedo high yeld on Donatra's ship. The pause between the normal fight and the boss fight on STFs/Fleet Defense allow u to change quickly ur bridge officers.
