Why exactly, should I bother _trying_ to survive that, and not just put everything into some shiny dual cannons? Just spike my defense by zooming off to 20K away or take it out before it even gets off the ground with cannon spread...
I should note that I think the second was only as "low" as 76K because I was at full shields and stacking a few hull and shield resistance buffs. Note that's not even the only two. That's just the first two I spotted in the log before giving up.
Assuming that it is not the dreaded invisible heavy plasma torpedo of death, then it is easy to shoot down if you pay attention. Sometimes when a heavy plasma torpedo is nearby, then I spend a couple of seconds shooting it down since if its not dealt with could cause me or a teammate a death.
If the borg obeyed the game's rules, then the heavy torpedo hits would be survivable for a well equipped ship. Kinetic damage is supposed to be only 10% effective on shields.
Unfortunately, borg like all NPCs are cheating bastards who don't follow the rules. For NPCs, torpedoes are much more (50%?) effective versus shields. The logic is that NPCs are stupid and don't know how to batter down shields and push through a torpedo; that's good logic as far as it goes, but when you give the borg torpedo launchers that do 50K base damage, they can blast through shields instantly.
And yeah. The insane cheese of the borg heavy plas torp really aggravates me.
I think it's pretty obvious that all we need here is a Reputation Project where you can get an invisible super duper plamsa transphasic multidimensional oompa looma torpedo that kills spheres in one hit. That will solve everything.
Well, your logic is wrong... A SCI could clear that Buff (Subnucleonic Beam) from the cube before it shoots the torpedo, or shut the cube down (Viral-Matrix) before it can act against any team-member.
Even if you see one of those torpedoes coming close, simply press brace for impact or if that is on cooldown polarize-hull. Polarize Hull is also a good way to escape from a cube, since it makes you immune to its tractor-beam.
If Star Trek Online was an Open-Source (GPL) Game, we would have a low-grind fork.
I use tractor beam repulsors on my cruiser as a point defense against the plasma torpedoes. It always hits them, and can shoot down more than one. As an added bonus, it is useful at keeping the nanite spheres and probes from repairing the 2 transformers in Cure Space.
Escorts have their uses of course but one must remember that the escort also attracts a lot of nimrods who think spike DPS is the end-all of all things.
Think of little kids who are firmly convinced that anything loaded with sugar is a gourmet meal, or the legions of dullard movie-goers whose senseless patronage floods the big screen with mindless drivel amounting to nothing more than a series of explosions and uninspired effects standing-in for anything substantive--and thereby let things like JJ Abrams happen...
Now, don't get me wrong, I myself have a toon that flies an escort and a well-captained escort can be a thing of beauty. Still, an insane number of jerks. The STF crowd especially so. Find the ship that suits you best and learn to make use of it. That's it--your good.
