D'Kora, the most underrated ship in the game, running 4 different setups on it as an engineer, can heal, can tank and a viable 3rd hitter in a premade.
A month or so ago, I would have sworn blind that my Mobius was the Alpha and the Omega. The strangest thing happened, I purchased the Steamrunner on a whim and couldn't believe how well she performed. Moves like a dream, tough as nails and packs a wallop. A couple of purple warp core engineers encourage the power levels to be ticking close to maximum.
Looks great from behind (and let's face it, that is what we spend the majority of our time looking at ... ) with the 45 degree engines.
I keep trying other ships, but have come back to the Steamrunner each time.
The ship i gravitate to is the Galaxy Class, i just love that ship. I like its unique proportions and yet somehow simple look that make it look much more advanced than any ship in STO.
But i also know that in STO it is a complete different ship than in any other game or TV.
I am used to see this ship as the most powerful in Starfleet, more powerful than a Ferengi Marauder, more powerful than at least two Galor Classes and certainly more Powerful than a Ambassador and Excelsior.
So most of the time i fly the (in STO way superior) Fleet Assault cruiser refit. Flying this ship is just a joy. But still i don't like the whole design line the Assault cruiser decent, down to the excelsior (sorry Excel. fans, i hate that ship abysmal)
I am not saying the Regent was ugly or cheap made, it is certainly not, but it is just not my cup of tea. It looks really elegant, butway too fragile. I do like ships that look more powerful, elegant, sturdy with less extended/long nacelles.
So from time to time, i think i can live with a ship performing less awesome, as long as it looks like the big D with what i have grown up with.
So i usually go back to ESD/Shipyard, change the ship, optimize its BOFF layout and gear and go to space.
In earth orbit i realize how slllloooooooooooooooooooooooooooow it turns, but still i think, as long as i can fly this ship i won't care.
And so i go and do any mission as a warm up if you like to call it that way, mostly the daylies on the Klingon border/ around K-7.
As soon as am fighting the first true way attackers at traelus, i start to realize how inferior it is compared to the ships i usually fly.
In practice it is almost impossible to align the ship fast enough to fire some torpedoes to a enemies dropped shields. I am also astonished how much of a difference 2 tactical consoles do.
I don't want to go into any more details, let me just say that after 2 or 3 more missions i am so frustrated that i transwarp back to ESD and change to my previous ship.
I just don't get it why they had to make the Galaxy class the most defensive ship in the game, couldn't they just have taken one of their own designs like the typhoon or that other ugly thing we saw in the beginning of STO? (i hate CRYPTIC for making the galaxy so boring...)
I absolutely hate the Galaxy class slow turnrate and its BOFF & Console layout.
CRYPTIC, please give us Cruisers that do not feel like a punishment, starting with the Galaxy Class: enhanced exploration cruiser retrofit 3 pack very little work for you + 50$ from me = a huge leap in our friendship!
Though I can't stand how it looks, for tanking I always find myself going back to my Odyssey and/or my Excelsior Retro-fit. I tend to get kind of bored and just try different builds on a ton of different ships and always seem to find my way back to the Excelsior, at least with my Engineering captains.
KDF - Breen Cruiser. She ugly to a point where shes AWESOME!!
But seriously it would be quite corking and oh so nice if my Gorn could, I dunno,...................hijack a Excelsior using Marauding...............maybe tractor someone else's Excelsior over the FED/KDF Zone border.
Have a word with the Tholians.
I'D LOOK AFTER IT!!!! I swear. =3

The Breen Chel Grett on my main. Since I got it, even though I've tried my other ships for various runs, I always go back to it. It's got a very nice balance between eng and tac/sci play- enough hull points for miracle worker to let me get and stay out of sticky situations, enough turn power not to feel like a whale, and is generally just a very nice ship with a solid boff and console layout.
However, I think that's largely because it has almost the same boff layout as my MVAM Escort, soon to be (Fleet) Advanced Escort, which was 'my return ship' for as long as I had that.
Even though I have an HEC, a Galaxy, A Sovereign and Mirror Sovvie, and a bunch of other T5 ships, I always go back to that configuration. The mix of tactical and science skills just feels right with my engineer main.
Conversely, for the longest time I didn't *have* that kind of ship for my sci alt. Oh, sure, she has a defiant retrofit (token version), a fleet recon, a patrol escort, the MVAM Escort, and an HEC, and a steamrunner and the mirror Advanced Escort/Patrol Escorts, but while fun, none of them ever really 'felt right' and I was always nervously shifting ships, trying to find the one that I liked the most. She even has the breen ship (all my chars do), but I don't end up flying it very long even though breensci is a very potent combo.
No, as it turns out, my 'one true ship' for my sci alt is in fact the Support Retrofit (ie: the Ambassador @ T5). It's a cruiser, sure, and I'd long been dissatisfied with cruiser gameplay, but it turns well enough to benefit from turn rate consoles, it has a solid non-fleet tier layout for boffs and consoles, and it's a very nice looking ship.
But what's really important is that it *plays* well. Whenever I'm on my non-engineers, I always feel far squishier and have more difficulty staying alive- but the ambassador has enough hull and shields to give me breathing room, and its engineer heavy focus lets me run enough skills that I can keep that hull and shields running, while entertaining builds I otherwise wouldn't.
Right now I'm running a boarding party 3 system disabling build (and also viral matrix), which while might otherwise not be of use due to the ease of countering boarding parties, becomes useful on a Sci who can subnuc the target before the shuttles hit.
It's still a work in progress mind, but in testing it's shown potential to be very useful, and very fun.
