Hello, i'm still pretty new to the game and just made my first KDF toon and decided to make an eng. I really like the thought of big huge battleships and was wonder if they are worth going or should I go the carrier route?
I thought about doing the BoP but my main Fed toon is a escort and i really like beam weapons and would like to be able to take a hit.
what class classes of ships are good route to go and way.
also should I change my toon and switch to a different class?
Its almost the same experience if you ave a Fed engineer, your drones look different and you have some better melee weapons.
Its much more enjoyable to fly the cruisers on the KDF side because they can cloak, turn like escorts, mount canons and are more tactically friendly. Many of the KDF ships can can do hit and run attacks. Based on you weapon preferences go with a Neg'var, if you go carriers go with the Kar'fi, it turns better. The BoP are fun, I prefer the hegh'ta due to the higher hit points and layout of the Boffs stations.
I use a Karfi, Voquv, and Bortasqu on my eng. Neghvar would also be a good choice of cruiser for an eng if you don't want to get the Bortasqu due to its cost or low turn rate, but it doesn't have as much firepower, tankiness, or universal boffs like Bortasqu does.
I love mine. My Capt. is in a Negh'Var and can really chew up my enemy. Once I get my sights locked in. And let loose my cannons. I even killed Romulan Warbirds and other large Capital ships with ease. After my first pass and once I get turned for the 2nd. They are usually dust not long after that.
Ground just as fun as the Fed. However I have a melee weapon to add a different style. So I can hack into my enemy. Like any Klingon loves to do. Over all I would do it all over again. Been a fun time that is for sure.
Bortasqu steers like a wounded bison. But it does let you go more tactical.
Uhm....no it doesn't, it steers like a blue whale that had eaten an Airbus filled with schoolbusses
Jokes aside, I'm more of a cruiser man myself and I really like the Bortasqu'. For me it's the best ship created in STO. It takes a bit of time to get used to it and with the proper setup, especially if you have the 3-pack it can be decent in steering as well. And is perfect if you're planing to use a cruiser with beams like you mentioned, but you'd be missing out not mounting DHC on Klingon battlecruisers.
If you decide to go DHC, it is achievable on Bortasqu' but it takes much tuning and training and you might want to try some of the more manuverable beasts like the Vor'Cha retrofit, the Negh'var or the Torkhant. Anyways you'll have more fun as an engineer, since KDF cruisers are much more fun than the Fed. ones.

Of late, I have actually been experimenting in pvp with my tac in a Negh'Var. Now, that character is specced for the ship, including maxed impulse thrusters and the works, but I am very content with it.
Its alpha strike hits like a freight train, because it can load 8 weapons and slot 2 eptw's to sustain that power drain, in addition to a load of tanky/healing skills. The turn rate is decent enough to keep most things in the sights of my DHC's, and it can take enough of a pounding to frequently make feddies fly off in frustration.
Now, with an engineer, you'll do a bit less damage because you don't get the captain skills APA, GDF and FOMM, but you will be even sturdier and sure of power supply. I imagine that might even free up a slot for, say a second DEM or something equally offence-supporting. I suspect a well-specced engineer in a decently set-up Negh'Var will be a very hard nu to crack, while also pumping out good damage.
Edit: also, take into consideration when choosing your free T5 ship that the Vor'cha battlecruiser, the Qin raptor and the Voquv carrier have mirror versions that can be had from the exchange. And that, as of this evening, you'll be able to get a free battlecruiser, for the next two weeks, because of the 3-year celebrations.
for the free LG ship , i would suggest you to get the negh'var, and grab a mirror vo'quv (which is better suited for an engineer ) from the exchange for arround 500k.
But you can expand your experience by joining a fleet to get a fleet vorcha which is a great damage dealing cruiser or my prefered , the on i use on my engineer : the corsair flight deck cruiser retrofit which is realy different from fed cruisers
