# 1 Green Stuff & BOff's
02-09-2013, 05:30 AM
So, I started playing STO last week and made my way to lvl 6. I'm having a great time, most of all with just flying around, entering a random system, and seeing what happens. That said, as I am progressing quite well, I still have absolutely no idea what I'm doing.

First of all I earned a lot of green "bound when equiped" gear from quests and random drops. I have not used any of it, instead using some of the unbound items I found, the reason being me having no idea of the value of items. Is it worth keeping green gear to trade, or can I just use it and sell it to an NPC later?

Secondly, I got two BO candidates from Quinn's first quest and I've just completed a quest which lets me pick another. Is there any reason to refuse an allready listed candidate alltogether, does it require money/credits or space to accept one? And is there any way to check out how a certain BO looks before accepting him/her or even selecting a certain BO as a quest reward?

Finally my starter ship (Light Cruiser) is actually of the ShiKahr rather than Miranda class. Is that normal, and is it normal that I can seemingly change it class and looks at no expense? I have not actually went through with any modifications, but in the shipyard whenever I change the ships class (before I press cancel) the costs listed are just zero. Is this a one time offer?

Equip your Uncommon stuff. At this level? It's worth nothing whatsoever, seeing as most of the stuff that's WORTH something is level 50, Mk XII Very Rare stuff. So use it at will, don't bother with cost 'til you hit level 50.

As for the BOff, the ones you get from leveling up and quests are given to you for free, but you can buy various ones in Earth Space Dock for cheap. There's no reason whatsoever to refuse a BOff at all, since at the very least, they take space that never seems to run out. You can check how they look by accepting them, really. If you don't like their look, you can fully customize them as you can your own character, so go wild.

And yes, kitbashing is normal. Well, the first time you change it's appearance it's free, but other subsequent changes cost some money, though it's basically nothing, compared to the hundreds you'll eventually make. So yes, it is a one-time offer. USE IT WISELY.

Keep in mind you do have a limited number of slots for commissioned BOs (4 at your current level) as well as for candidate BOs (max of 12)...

Tier 2 ships, (available when you Rank Up at level 10) require 4 BOs to operate, but the type needed for that 4th BO (e.g. Engineer, Tactical, Science) depends on the type of ship you choose. So you should start researching what you want to fly, and start preparing your Bridge Crew to fly it accordingly...

BO looks are random, but looks can always be changed at the Tailor after the fact. Some Quests do give you a choice of BOs to choose from...

If you want some in game help add @BigGunner to your friends list.
im not sure if you know how to send friend invites so ill just explain it below.

in the upper right you have your minimap, to the right of your minimap there are various buttons. one will look like a bunch of peoples heads and say social when you scroll over it. open that up.

once social tab is open click the friends tab on the top bar.
add friend button is at the bottom right.

hope to see you in game

Hmm,.. still good to know though. I'm gonna save that one-time offer for my second ship and save a bit more money on customising that one XD

Well 12 is still quite a lot I guess. The question is: can you fire BO's you've allready accepted to free up some extra space? If not, then I'm just gonna refuse all those Andorian candidates. I just find those umbilical-cord like antennae revolting, and they can't be customised/tailored away.

You do indeed have the option to discharge any Boff you have, just choose the discharge option from the menu. Remember to take out any gear you want to keep first though, I believe everything they carry would be deleted too.

Yes, you can fire BOffs. You'll get more as you level up, so you should be OK with firing them. Also, I think it's a one-time offer per new ship, so you get a one-time offer for your Miranda, and your next tier ship, etc. But like I said, the most you'll spend on customizing your ship is like 6,000 EC, which is pocket change in this game.

You can fire BOs, however, the BO Skill points you've invested in them goes with them... And a new player is going to be perpetually short of BO Skill points until you hit Commander level...

(The only way around this is join a Fleet, then find a nice friendly Level-Capped player who can train your BOs up in Skill Points via a face to face BO trade. But this should only be done with someone you can trust to return your BO back to you...)

You get one free change per ship, and they're not transferable, ie. your light cruiser's free change is only good on that ship, but you get another when you get your next ship.

you can fire them, but keep in mind that you loose any gear still attached to them when you do (same with discharging ships), be sure to field strip your boffs before you show them the airlock.

When you get a new whatever in the game, you get a free customization token to change it. For Bridge Officers, you get one free tailor session and one free rename. When you get a new ship ( and I mean every new ship), you get one free ship tailor session, one free ship rename, and one free ship renumber.

Changing things after the free change are generally quite modest in terms of Energy Credits. A complete change of a ship at max level is only a few hundred thousand energy credits. At max level that won't be much at all.

So by all means change your ship to the way your want it.
