The way I see it, is the fact that I see my game play as bad when I die in a mission. I should kill the enemy, not the other way around. However you can finish mission with and without dieing. In most cases nothing resets, you respawn and finish an already weakened enemy.

At low levels, the game is the hardest. You have hardly any skills, any good gear, so it are just tactics, but what are your tactical options? Low level game is pretty easy with crafted gear though.

The low level Romulan ships, Mogai and D'Dederix did destroy me a couple of times. How did I beat them. I mounted two good beams and a Hargh'peng torpedo, circled them from 6 to 10 km and nuked them with the HP.

New player here (I started playing ~3 weeks ago). The D'D caused quite a bit of frustration when I first ran into it (Commander level, Engineer in an Escort). Previously everything else keeled over quickly when I used the "Kill it with fire" strategy of strafeing them head on guns blazing. D'D I barely scratched the paint and *poof*
Bridge Officer:"forward shields down, hull integrity 25%".
Commander Takeda: “Holy @$#@$, where’s the Engineering Team button, Turn and get that down shield facing away… Okay, Miracle Worker button, Evasive maneuvers, run… Oh @#$@# here it comes again… and dead”
After several attempts I wound up working out a strategy where I whittled him down with "gun runs" to knock his shields down, turn 180 degrees between 4-5 km out and hit him with the aft torpedoes. Worked reasonably well, but time consuming. I actually went back to ESD and bought a bunch of cheap stuff that I thought might help vs. the D’D too (I had neglected some of my console slots, got other powers in BoFF slots, etc).
The game was so easy prior to that one ship that it didn’t matter what I did, as long as I gave it the old college try, the Orions, Klingons, Gorn, and even the smaller Rommies weren’t a big problem. The encounter difficulty prior to hitting the double D hadn't prepared me for that. Everything else in the game keeled over after a couple passes. A few other vessels earlier that could pull a trick or two would have been nice. Finding this thread earlier would have been nice too.

So, thanks for making this thread. I haven't read all of it yet, but I'll definitely be mining it for different setups, etc.

Are there other places I should dig to find info out on mechanics/builds/trait build/boffs?... there's a lot to customize here. What I have works, no doubt, but I don't doubt that I could make a lot of improvement, and probably insanely easily.

There are a number of places that offer advice on ship builds, but generally what you find is written for people at max level. This isn't surprising, since even a brand new player with a moderate amount of play will be max level inside 3-4 weeks. You'll just have to scale things down a bit, and do as much as you can with your fewer Boff and console slots.

The best starting place is the Hilbert Guide. It's a simple, cheap to execute, "just do this" guide to getting a competent ship and captain build. It's framed as a PvP guide, but a good PvP setup is a good PvE setup (the opposite is not necessarily true). If you manage to learn and incorporate even half of what he has to say, you will absolutely wreck all story content you come across.

http://hilbertguide.com/

Once you're further along, the always useful "New PvP help and ship build thread" has links to more in depth topics, tons more sample ship builds, and just about everything else you'd ever want to know

http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com/sh...d.php?t=427091

And if you have specific questions, you can ask in the ship build forum for your chosen faction.

It's very simple folks.... You wanna beat a D'derridex? Keep your distance during the fight and you'll beat it eventually. Get too close... hit that abandoned ship button

i never had a great deal of problems with the D'dex when I first started playing. The mogai, however, gave me fits. Seems I'd blow up whenever I saw one.

@Shockwave-

Thanks so much. You were not kidding. I was able to get about halfway into his build (just hit 50 not too long ago and my playtime is limited) and I've been stomping stuff on normal. Very useful!

I'll admit it, I'm not really a tactical genius irl so it took me several tries until I beat the D'deridex for the first time (many months ago). I tried many things and always ended up at 4km and shot down by triple torps.

If you're a Commander or above and want to sacrifice your ship's Lieutenant sci slot (if you're in a sci vessel I don't see why not, and even other ships will benefit) put Tractor Beam Repulsors. It shoots down all torps at once, pushes the D'deridex at +5km (thus rendering their Tractor null) and looks cool (okay, this is not a tactical advantage but blue waves of energy coming from your ship are cool).

If you're on an escort and don't want to add this very useful ability (it doesn't even need to be permanent, I changed it to something else after I was done with Romulan missions) you should sneak around from outside weapons range and hit all your amazing tac abilities (Rapid Fire, Tac Team etc etc) while facing the bum of the D'deridex so it doesn't use Viral Matrix.

If you're on a cruiser or sci ship and don't want Repulsors just face the opposite direction of the D'deridex and circle around it at 7km or so. It should circle around too, thus keeping weak shield facing. Just fire at it with your beam arrays until it blows up (broadside it if you're familiar with the term). Sometimes you may need to use Evasives if you see it turning faster, so you can keep on their weaker shield and not let it use Viral Matrix.

That's all there is to it really, Mogai is more annoying than the D'deridex if you're not sci (and can't use Subnucleonic Beam)

You're very welcome, though you should really thank Hilbert for putting all that together

As an added bonus, not only do you destroy single player content, but you should be in much better shape than most new players as you start to get into STFs and other endgame content. Just make sure you understand the strategies for the missions, but your ship and captain should be up to the task.

One more way to escape tractor beam without polarize hull, just to enable max forward speed and use evassive maneuvers it still keep you, yo will be unable to turn a while, but in this way easy to get solid distance from an enemy with over 5km range ;-) and to avoid slow plasma torpedos.
