Personally I wish they'd switch to Qt + WebKit in the launcher. Those work so much better and cleaner with wine.

aunixa's workaround didn't work for me. Maybe because I have an ATI card. I don't know.

Anyway, I got the game to start by adding the 'PrefEntry GfxSettings.Fullscreen 0' to the live/localdata/pref file.

Now to fix the other problems.

- No sound - no selectable sound output device.
- Lots and lots of distorted graphics. So far it's been most of the character selection screen, the minimap, loading screens etc.
- No anti-aliasing - sharp pixelated edges.
- The game fracks up, if I try to run it in 1920x1080 windowed (that works fine in Windows).

*sigh*

The sound doesn't work? I guess I should test that, I don't play mmo's with sound so I never bothered to check.

# 374 Sound

I used this solution from earlier in the thread to get sound ( I never set it to disabled though)

run winecfg, select libraries, add "mmdevapi" and set it to "disabled" (needed for sound!)

I'll try that when I have time.
What version of Wine did you use?

I updated to 1.2 rc and audio now works fine with the mmdevapi plugin set in the override list.

I had a great deal of trouble with the Online Downloader, but once I ran the client downloader in a Windows VM, I copied the resulting installation files directory over to the linux host so that I could run the install there. Mind you, this was after the winetricks ie6 and ie7 attempts. (ie7 bypasses the annoying javascript error, but also strangely introduces a blank page upon startup in addition to the normal STO login browser screen. Not sure why that is even under a clean/fresh WINEPREFIX dir.)

(Re: Using client downloader, it was crashing at random points initially only a few seconds into the download for the client - regardless of the OS setup in winecfg for that WINEPREFIX installation. After a certain number of crashes, it would simply stall indefinitely. The above mentioned workaround solved the problem and I had absolutely no trouble with patching outside of the minor javascript issue mentioned.)

I also installed PhysX (via winetricks) on the off chance support was included in this version (and there is limited support in wine for it) as my video cards support that. I also added directX 9/10 via winetricks (in addition to the aforementioned ie6 and 7).

The patching worked.

System as follows:

Gentoo Linux (64 bit) running a desktop profile with wine as ~amd64
Currently using wine 1.2_rc2.

Hardware:
2 Quad-core Opteron 2378s (8 cpus total)
16G RAM
2 Nvidia GTX 275s with 896M video ram (connected via SLI interface)
Soundblaster X-Fi Gamer sound card
4 1TB drives in a raid 10 config
(various other crap nobody would care about including jfs - yes, I'm just that weird)

This configuration seems to work for me for the moment (yes, this is my desktop, no it's not a server), but it pretty much has to be in it's own WINEPREFIX directory. I have other games and didn't want this one with its whacky requirements to do harm to them.

Got it to work with aunixas guide - including sound (although there's some "ticks" in the sound).
Now there's only the above things left to fix.

Here's some screendumps of the distorted graphics:
