Got the GimmeDLL.DLL message under my wine install.

Will try with Crossover Games and see if that has same or similar issues

The "GimmeDLL.dll" error message is most likely just due to the fact that we don't have STO's debugging tools installed. I certainly hope it's not the cause of the errors.

# 53 Linux wine, can i help
01-16-2010, 03:01 AM
It only took me 4 days to download the 7.7gb but the install went flawlessly. I chose vista for that.
I winetricked recommended minimum of ie6 and msxml

After login, the app unrecognised my 1gb NVIDIA 9800 GT, i made adjustments to the HKCU Direct3D, but still unrecognised.

I moved forward using both default gfx settings and reduced. both ways the app crashed soon after the atari logo during progress.

I tried Windows 7 as the os, no go. I tried XP as the os, no go.

I tried wine versions 1.1.27, 1.1.29, 1.1.35 and 1.1.36, no go.

My box is ubuntu karmic with 8gb ram phenomX2 4proc, i am certian i meet most requirements.

Would i still have these issues if i had XP as my base os?
I would rather not have to install XP cos it is very sucky.
I could get Windows 7, but i would rather stick with linux as it isn't sucky.

If i can help in any way for testing this to work please let me know?

# 54 Attempted Run in VirtualBox
01-16-2010, 03:47 AM
Hey yall,

Just a little update.

Now, I have attempted to run sto on XP in VirtualBox, with ubuntu karmic as my host,
It is a flawless install too.

One difference is the login/web page, which holds more details about sto, the wine install i mentioned previously just showed a cryptic webpage.

Running it in vbox with 4gb and just one proc it seemed to progress around 20-30% further than the wine attempt.

But still my graphics card is unrecognised, which is expected in a vritual machine, i suppose

i get to the same crash... with the.... memTrackValidateHeap: Infinite loop walking heap... errors. I have tried a few Wine versions including winehacks git... its not playing nice at all. Haven't figured out what exactly is causing it. I guess playing it under Wine is gonna take awhile til one of us can figure out whats causing the problem and find a way around it...

I just have to post this...

I never thought it would work, but I ran STO in my VMware virtual machine... VMware Fusion 3... running my other partition i boot on to play STO... and it actually works!

it really works... no joke... I only have my Geforce 9400m running so its pretty bad frame rates.. but its actaully playable with all the settings turned way down. I'll have to try more settings and turn on my 9600, and see if its a decent way to play until we can get Wine running it..

well so far space battles are doable tough the mouse tracking speed is way too fast, but turning it to minimum is ok... frame rate on the ground is decent too ... but anytime someone pops up on the screen to say anything everything flickers badly and its hard to read and click on to get away...

VMware fusion uses wined3d to handle its graphics, so it means wine is capble of handling the engine if we can figure out why its doing this crash.

I know very little about tweeking wine, but I do know a fair bit about games, One thing I have noticed is that opening cinematics tend to have a bad effect on many computers with unfortunately low settings. Since so far, running STO in wine seems to always say the requirements are not met due to problems getting graphics to be recognised, I was wondering if the problem lies in the loading of such cinematic. If there is an opening, is there a setting to skip it somewhere that we can turn on?

I run STO on my 13" macbook pro in Windows 7, and as far as I know any method of running the game through OS X will simply be an emulation, so unless you have a very powerful mac then it's never going to run anywhere near as well as it will under Windows. Or is there a non-emulation method I'm not aware of? If so tell me what it is and I'll test it

Wine Is Not an Emulator

@doh123, that is good to know, and it seems the problem does lie in the way wine handles memory, and the graphics problems we are experiencing probably stems from wine not passing accurate system specs. I know that is it supposed to guess graphics cards based on opengl extensions or something.

Has anyone tried dual booting, running the client under windows, proving that the install worked fine, and then booting into linux and running the same install under wine? Maybe if we can get past the loading screen once it'll generate a config file that contains something we are missing. Long shot, but I'm tired of losing the hype for this game.

Here's a backtrace from winedbg. I've attached to GameClient.exe while it was complaining about not recognizing my video card.

If anyone else would like to try this run:
winedbg --command 'info proc'
To get the list of running process, then run:
winedbg PID
Where PID is the *decimal* version of the *hex* number reported by the first command
