# 1 Runabouts and Delta Flyer
12-30-2012, 02:21 PM
I'm curious if anyone knows what the reasoning is behind the specifications on the Danube class Runabout.

I just recently purchased a Delta Flyer. I notice that it's half the size of a Runabout, but it has two officer slots compared to the 1 on the Runabout. Seeing as how the Runabout is essentially a small starship compared to the Flyer which is a glorified shuttle, I would think the Runabout would have a minimum of 2 officer slots, 3 would be better.

I can understand why the Flyer would have better shields and be faster with the theoretical Borg enhancements built into it, but the size of the Runabout should allow for a greater crew compliment, which would mean more officers you can take with you.

Also seems like it should have one more weapon slot.

It's just an annoyance. I like the Runabout, but it never makes sense to take it since the Flyer has better specs. I would love to see the Runabout tweaked to make it more useful.

Just was curious

Not sure how it is obtained at the moment, but at the start, the Runabout was obtained through Energy Credits and the Delta Flyer required Cryptic Points or doing a specific mission that took about a week to do.
Delta Flyer costs more so it should have better stats.

I think the Delta Flyer must have been larger than a runabout or at least have more operational capacity.
If you remember, the Runabout has two chairs up front that control all systems. I think there were four officers positions in the Delta Flyer, though.
So just by that, it makes sense that the Flyer would probably have more capability in game as well.

Delta Flyer couldn't be anywhere near as big as a Danube and fit inside Voyager's shuttlebay, which was just barely big enough to house the Type-9 shuttles it did.

The Delta Flyer's size has been a matter of dispute for a long time, but it's nowhere near the size of a Danube nor should it ever even be considered anywhere near the size of a Danube.

The thing with the Delta Flyer is, it's a hero ship. I don't even know why it's in the game considering it was a one-off ship that Starfleet already had equal or superior units in service, like the Type-11..

The Delta Flyer never made much sense to me. Why didn't they just use Voyager's aeroshuttle?

Rewatch the episode where the Flyer is built.

The shuttles couldn't handle the things the crew of Voyager Needed them to handle.

Also, the Flyer was two decks, or at least a deck and a sub-deck. Seating for four crew and likely (though not seen) bunks similar to what we can see on the Defiant.

The delta flyer had that little back room with two beds and a medical bay.

And the Aeroshuttle was supposedly not finished. The canon reason was the ship was brand new, and an aeroshuttle wouldn't be necessary for a quick trip to the badlands.

The actual reason was that Insurrection was in production and they didn't want to outstage the captain's yacht launch scene, iirc.
Of course, I don't know why they couldn't have just finished the aero shuttle and called it the delta flyer or why the intrepid class still doesn't have a functional aero shuttle to this day.

It could do little heals or something. Like a sci ship should.

It should be known by now that Starfleet rarely throws away superior designs. The Type-11 was an incremental design update of the shuttles Voyager had (Type-9). The Delta Flyer was ahead of its time and better than anything Starfleet had at that point in time in that form factor. Even the Type-11 didn't hold a candle since the DF was faster and versatile.

According to soft canon(novels) Titan had Type-11s but only one Flyer and it was the fastest shuttle they had. http://memory-beta.wikia.com/wiki/Flyer_class

They should've used it after Insurrection was filmed, then. Voyager ran for 3 years after Insurrection ended. It would've been okay to use the Aeroshuttle since the fans would've already been familiar with embarking craft integrated into the hull.

And apparently they're not uncommon at all on Federation ships.

Galaxy had a captain's yacht
Intrepid had the Aeroshuttle (Which is an awesome concept in itself..)
Nova has the Waverider shuttle
Sovereign has the captain's yacht
Defiant has the "warhead" section

I'd love to see the Aeroshuttle as a workable embarking craft ingame, even. Could use it as a shuttle if you own an Intrepid, or even separate since apparently they were used as normal large shuttles before the Intrepid was constructed.

The one thing I could always think was that if they used the Aeroshuttle, and lost it, they'd have a gaping hole in the hull for a perceived 70 years..They could replace a shuttle, but something as big as the aeroshuttle might've been more...difficult.

But the fact that it was never even brought up as an option...

Plus, this is STO, so 3 decades on, the Delta Flyer is no longer a one-off hero ship, but a mass-produced, "Delta-class" shuttle.

As others have said earlier, the overall crew complement (or seating, at least) on a Delta is similar to a Runabout, and given what capabilities the Delta had, it managed similar performance, if not necessarily durability.

As it stands in terms of in-game performance, The hangar-pet version of Deltas have a native Tachyon Beam and Transphasic torps to reflect their "advanced tech" nature. By comparison runabouts have a native tractor beam to reflect their rugged reputation.

Well it would be cool if it would do something but heals would take away alot from the Vulcan ship, especially since the Intrepid has a fleet version.

From the looks at it, maybe make it something combat based, like a smaller version of what the Odyssey and Bortasqu use? Like maybe a three minute cooldown with less damage potential.
