I am playing a Science Officer and have finally reached Commander and have my Research Science Vessel. I think I am now at the point where I have to start thinking of the future of my character and plan for it.
My ship is currently equipped with 2 dual phaser banks, the Hargh'peng torpedo launcher and 2 aft phaser turrets. In terms of ship combat I find that I prefer having dual banks instead of arrays or cannons. The aft turrets are for multi-directional firing used with 'fire at will' of course.
Since my gameplay requires putting the enemy within the forward 95 degree arc I will need a bit of maneuverability, so no flying rocks please. I am not looking for a dps monster and I would like good balance of engine, hull and shields.
I am currently fleetless, but I am looking for a fleet so fleet ship recommendations are also welcome.
In addition to gameplay, I do prefer Starfleet (or Romulan) aesthetics so I do not particularly like the lines of the Jem'Hadar and Caitian ships.
DBBs work well on science ships because you have a pretty decent turn rate, even if it isn't as quick as an escort, you don't have a tough time keeping them in your forward arc. I normally use single cannons or DBBs up front with a 2 beam/turret + launcher in the back. Given the fact a lot of your sci abilities like Sub Nuke, Tachyon Beam, Grav Well, Tyken's, etc. all require you to be facing them on your forward arc, the science ships can make good use of DBBs.
For end game/VA in a science ship you'll probably want to look at the Vesta if you are planning on buying a Z-store ship. If not the Recon/DSSV are both pretty solid vessels, just depends on what you want to go with. I prefer the Recon/Luna because I like the design better plus you get a little more tactical emphasis so you can take more advantage of using single cannons or DBBs and torpedoes. The Mirror versions of both the Recon and DSSV are nice as well and can be had for 400-500k(last time I checked on Exchange) if you don't want to buy a ship with Zen.
recommend the Wells, Vesta, and Luna classes since they can deal damage along with keeping the science abilities at a premium if you can get a Wells then i highly advise you keep that tipler on since it can more than likely save your life on top of that the Wells has one of if not the the best shield mods for science ships.
Yeah, I have heard good things about the Wells and Vesta ships though I joined too late to acquire temporal lock boxes (have a ton of Dominion ones in my Bank). I'll go to the wiki and contrast and compare the suggestions.

I use mine with the borg set but even without it I could switch out my denube runabouts for my shield repair bots. Healing my team is awesome while debuffing everything. I use the vesta exclusively for science now. I wasn't impressed with the time ships honestly, they could have done more then just a 13 second rewind.

gravity/flow capacitor heavy
polarized disruptor beams
transphasic torpedo launcher in front (tried the harghpang didn't like it)
chroniton torp in front
cutter beam in back (since it seems to be 360)
and romulan stealth tractor mines in back (use these for those borg STF's that have alot of patrols)
Seems to work well. The tractor beams being crazy in this game seem to help too will be using these until they discover they work well and suddenly nerf them like they have every other science ability. I use repulsors to do extra damage when shields are down and tractor beam to drain shields with the Doff equipped.
If you like more hull I'd suggest a nebula. Not a bad turn rate and great for sensor skills.

Agree - the Vesta is, in my opinion, the best choice. Granted, it's hull strength is poor but a decent shield setup can offset that. The consoles are great and it can hold it's own DPS-wise courtesy of those rather nice phaser Aux-cannons, and having carrier pets is the icing on the cake.
My personal second recommendation would be the often understated Fleet Nova class - it can be surprisingly effective (for a sci ship) with it's Lt-Cmdr Tac (boff) slot on top of some nice possible sci ability setups, and it's fast and nimble. Can be quite a little menace if used well and I am personally very fond of firing off GWIII and then using a mine dispersal pattern (courtesy of the aforermentioned Lt-Cmdr tac boff slot) to dump some tric mines in the centre of the gravity well, followed up with a Transphasic cluser torpedo to add insult to injury. Can do a very nice amount of damage with that combo.

Temporal ships are the best right now and if you farm EC you could buy one outright from the exchange. The Vesta pack is a solid choice. Fleet Nova is good too bc you have a escort like turn rate and can speed tank with the best of them
Best thing to do endgame is try them all. See which fits your play style best.
