Awfully vague, need more details.

What class are you?
What role do you want to play?
Do you play PvE, PvP, or both?
What gear do you already have?
What Boff layouts are you used to?
What Duty Officers do you own?

Engineer ( rather be tactical)
Mostly more attack power and defense.
Both.
Can't answer that know.
Boff?
Bridge officers?

get no zen ships.
that you dont have an idea of the gear setup you want to use or have to build on is a bad enough sign of your as yet undeveloped ingame knowledge.

that you lack enough game knowledge to distinguish boffs(bridge officers) and they powers, from doffs(duty officers), and the effects they provide to active powers when set as active.
this means you wont be able to make an informed decision as to the ship class you will enjoy most.

my advice to you is to buy mirror ships off the exchange fill them with green/blue gear and use them until you have gained enough knowledge to decide on a payboat and make it work without buyers regret.
If you like the RPG trinity, then you hate MMOs, you hate working, competitive fair PvP, you hate balanced engaging solo content,
and,
you hate PvE "adventure zones". because the trinity is incompatible with any of these.

I totally agree with Skollulfr, you should stick to experimenting with free ships for now. But since you said you'd rather be a tactical than an engineer captain, you can't go wrong with the Armitage if you must spend your zen on some ship. It's a pretty versatile vessel for both a tactical and engineer captain.

Also, you might want to wait around 5th April, or that week at least, since that's First Contact day there might be a c-store/ship sale on.

As an Engineer captain you might as well make use of your innates and get yourself either a tanky escort (Armitage, Steamrunner, Jem HEC) or a tactical cruiser (Excelsior, Regent).

I've been on this game since 2011. I rarely ever talked until know and I don't use abbreviations like boff or doff.
And I have all the mirror ships. I have Jem'hadar set and some omega set.

Don't feel bad. It's easy to reach Level 50 (Vice Admiral) and still not know a lot of the basics. There is so much to know. Take your time and do your research and learn more first before you decide to buy ships.

Tier 5 ships that you can get when you reach Level 40 (Rear Admiral, Lower Half and Brigadier General) are ships that are good enough to use forever and in all content. (By the way, when you reach Level 50, you don't get another free ship because you already got to choose a Tier 5 ship.)

Again, DON'T think that you have to buy a ship right away (or at all,) consider buying one when you know more about the game and the differences between the ships, for example, like knowing the advantages/disadvantages between the different Bridge Officer slot ranks of a ship.

The best ship isn't just the ship. It's your character's skills that you invested into, combinations of abilities that your Bridge Officers have and the consoles that you put on your ship.... and ultimately knowing how to use all of these.

The first thing that you should be aware of when "leveling-up" (progressing your character up the ranks) is which of your character's "Skills" to put your points into. You will NOT have enough points to max out all of the skills and some skills are not as effective as others.

Look to STOwiki.org, research Character Skills, Bridge Officers and Duty Officers, and every other question that you may have - it's a great resource. Look to the "Stickys" in the forums here, these are posting subjects that everyone has agreed to have important information.

Good luck and have fun!

I will say this escorts rule the game 95% of the time. I fly a siege gorn ship i can hold my own v most players 1v1 sometimes 2 and 3 v 1 but i would wait till the new faction comes out may 21 play around with your set up find out what works for you. every one has a difrent play style some very aggressive some milde and some passive u need to set your ship up so it suits your play style i am eng on all but one of my toons so i have a lot of heal abilitys u can do the same for sci captins so before u buy a zen ship determine your play style set your ship up to better play off of your play style look at boff layout. and after a bit of time u will find out what works for u so do not jump in to a zen ship u might not like wait till u get more exp in combat change your setup to play off of your abilitys and with a lil luck u will do fine never rush in to buying anything till u are sure that is what u want there is no refunds if u do not like what u got

This is why I love this community.
Best advise !

If I may go a little further, join a fleet if you aren't already in one and make a few friends. They'll help you out a lot and help you test your builds.

My fleet is great and would love to help you if you are having trouble finding one.
Look me up ingame if you want an invite.

Also, I'd take a gander over at the PVP forums often.

They are ALWAYS discussing builds, powers, officer layouts you name it. Anything that works in PVP will roll over anything PVE.

Good luck
