With all the talk about DPS , Is there a standard method? Is there a designated combat log analyzer or some other method?

There are a number of third party parsers in use.

http://hilbertguide.com/ACT.html
are popular ones.

There is always concern over how accurate these really are, but unless you are planning on some extreme minmaxing, I don't think it is a problem.

the problem is, that many ppl use other parsers, because it is not accurate. while in reality it is accurate enough for most of the forum talk, this causes some issues. but as most ppl use the hilbert plugin with act, it is a good base of comparison, though it does not hurt to know the other parsers either (the enemy )

There are a couple more as well.

The one in the second post there is nice and simple to use, but it does register a little low (about 20% for me) compared to the Aria/Hilbert plugin.

This is the new kid on the block, it's very similar to the Aria/Hilbert plugin, and really just adds a few new features to the same thing, with its BaseDamage and Damage columns and a new sorting system. The former feature makes it my personal favorite.
