Wait! What am I using for my Warp core now?
Nothing? At present you have a [Fused] warp core that is a common. Probably a Mk X.

Well, not exactly.

The suggestion you're thinking of basically worked a lot like Base construction in City of Heroes, if I remember it correctly.

Warp Cores would provide a certain amount of Power and Computer Cores would provide a certain amount of Control (CPU was the term used, I believe). The kinds of Cores you could use would depend on the size, class, and rank of the ship.

Every component that you wanted to slot in would have a power requirement and a control requirement, and deduct what it needed from the available Power and Control provided by the Cores. Once you used up all of the available Power and/or Control, you couldn't slot anything else.

This could be a baby step in that direction, I admit. But I think I like this way better. A lot of room for customization and optimization, with less complexity (and headache from trying to put together a working configuration).

Makes me wonder how they'd implement Computer Cores, IF they decided to...

Considering the Defiant wasn't considered an escort in DS9, I hope that's the way things will go.

I would like to have all ship classes removed, and just be "This is this ship, that is that ship, this is what's awesome about this ship, etc".

It creates greater dynamics to the game as a whole by doing so.

The D'deridex may be one of the most venerable designs to ever come out of romulan shipyards, but personally, I'd take rather take command of a tac spec mogai. Faster turning rate, and they're simply sick looking ships. However, on the teaser site, they did show off a new design I'm quite keen on. I'm itching to see what they do in combat. And if the Scimitar class is brought in, I wonder what the devs will do to it's primary weapons (thalaron pulse)

This whole expansion stuff almost has me chomping at the bit to see it all unfold

You're using the same white matter-antimatter core that you'll be able to take out and replace when the update hits.

Suricata, among others, proposed an idea which separated engines/warp cores and had them controlling weapon layout among other things.

Yes, it was. Very first line spoken about the ship after everybody cleaned up their pants from Sisko's prank with the cloak. "Officially, she's classed as an escort."
