I just had a thought, one that would buff cruisers and make crew something worth worrying about.

Link crew to crew based abilities, IE tac team, engineering team, science team.

The more crew you have the better the ability, at 0 crew (like what happens with CE) the ability is disabled (much like boarding party).

This buffs cruisers in this aspect (because cruisers have multiple transporters and more crew).

nu uh, when I'm tanking in an STF on my engy I see my Ambassador and my Excelscior sometimes hit 0 crew

The crew mechanic is completely broken and has been since open beta. It needs a complete overhaul.

No it doesn't buff cruisers. This buffs escorts, because the ships with the smallest crews lose the least amount of crew and regen crew faster than any other ship in the game.

Well that's true now. It's not how it should work. If the crew system worked correctly the OP's idea might help make Cruisers and Sci ships a bit more powerful.

But the crew system doesn't work like that. And isn't likely to work like that. I've read dozens of ideas on how to use crew from players that you can tell lack any idea of how crew is functioning in the game right now. Yeah, cruisers and carriers have large crew stats. But that's a bad thing for them and has been a bad thing for them since 2010.

Luckily Crew doesn't affect the game play much at all. And that's how it should stay. There's other way to tinker with cruisers to make them more effective in STO.

Let crew stay as it is. Essentially a number that flashes on the screen but does mostly nothing.
