They give you a key, right click the installed client and copy the key and paste it into your account on startrekonline.com

I think I misworded my question, I already did all that, but when I go to launch the beta from steam, I get an error message
"This game is currently unavailable please try again later"
Which at first made me think the servers were down, but then I got on the site and it said the servers were fine so I don't know.

Make sure the .exe file isn't set to run as admin. I stuck it as that & started getting the error you have.

And how exactly do I do that?
I'm sorry I just don't want to go charging through all those files and possibly screw things up even more.

My filepath to STO is: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\star trek online
Yours should be similar, follow it to that point & there should be a file called star trek online, right click it. Go to compatability tab & make sure Run as Administrator isn't checked

Restart steam. Make sure windows isn't blocking anything.

I've never had this problem persist after doing that. (had steam since it came out.)

As said earlier the problem can be that you run star trek online with administrator rights if you use vista or win7 that is.

So do as GMRandom said
