With the Omega and Romulan reputation systems we've gained access to two potent plasma torpedoes: Omega Plasma Torpedo & Omega Plasma Torpedo.

Both wield a significant higher dps than a regular plasma torpedo.

Do you folks feel the regular has become obsolete?

If so, what changes would you propose to make it a viable alternative to the reputation variants.

The standard plasma torpedo is fine. It has reasonable base damage (initial hit is slightly less than a photon, but the dot more than makes up the difference) unlike the Omega torp, isn't targetable like the Hyper-Torp, and doesn't incur a massive CD change when using BOFF abilities.

Plus, it's much harder to blow oneself up with compared to the Hyper-Torp.

Has it become less popular as folks try to incorporate the Hyper and Omega torps into builds? Yes. Has it become obsolete? Not in the least.

The biggest problem with plasma torpedoes (all of em) is that if the target has a dot cleanse, they're considerably less useful.

I still find them wiable option, for example normal plasma torps do higher torpedo spread damage than omega torpedo does, and it hits faster than romulan torpedo, and the high yield portition is also faster, can be boosted by romulan set. when omega and romulan cannot be boosted by romulan space set aka deflector engine or shield.

I use normal plasma torps over omega or romulan on my torp boat because it simply is less high yieldish and it hits the enemy almost instantly, they also have higher base dmg which will make omega torp only do less dps because you cant fire other torpedoes. 3 normal torps alone is higher dps than 1 omega torp, also.. omega torp does weak dmg with torpedo spread. so if you sue omega, use high yield only, romulan in the case is slow torpedo and should only be considered with spread.

Just my opinion of the matter and differences pros and cons.

Nature of the beast a.k.a. set. Romulan and Reman sets only boost HY torpedoes not regular ones.

For PvE, any weapon works because AI is retarded. However, in PvP:

1) Plasma torpedos in high yield travel too slow. I can average about 12,000-18,000 dmge with HY3 (as a Tac using alpha + Omega 3) and have Crit for more than 30,000. However, you will never hit an escort with them and lots of time if you fly in at full impulse and fire the HY torpedo, not only do you travel faster than the torpedo, but you will be on top of the tgt by the time the torpedo hits and end up having plasma DOT on your hull. The best way to be sure to hit an opponent is to fire when really close . . .

2) Plasma envelopers only increase the torpedo's kinetic dmge, they do not boost the DOT damage. The DOT dmge is boosted by Plasma infusers (energy) consoles.

Now I've used the Romulan set and the HG set trying to see what works. Only HY benefits from Romulan set and IMO the HY torp is shot down or outrun by most players. As an avid torpedo chucker, quantums are the best because, they hit hardest, travel fastest (outside of Harpengh), can't be shot down, and have an 8 second reload time (the same as normal plasma torpedo). By this point the only viable PvP plasma build is to use plasma energy weapons with TS rom hyper torp and EWP to land as many dots as possible all around you. That way the plasma energy consoles can buff the DOTs into something that actually hurt other players. Its also important to hit them with enough DOTs over time that a single HE1 doesn't render all of your DOT damage useless. This also makes using the Rommy space set pointless, since TS gets zero benefits from it.

So its not that omega and romulan plasma torpedos render normal plasma torpedos obsolete. Its that ship speed in STO, HE1 and quantums rendered them obsolete from the beginning. This comes from a stubborn fool who is trying to like plasma torpedos.
