I'm considering switching from Escort to Cruiser at Captain just for the experience. This will mean losing one of my Tac stations while gaining an Eng.

My question is: Will I lose one of my Tac BOffs? I know I won't be able to assign them to a station but should I switch back to Escort at Admiral will that BOff still be in my roster to use or will I need to find a new Tac BOff?

(I know it's rather silly but I've gotten attached to my BOffs and I'd hate to lose one. )

all assigned BOff still remain in your roster (press "U" on the left side), when you switch ships. you'll get more slots for BOffs as you level. so you dont need or force to discharge BOffs, when you dont need them right now.

To explain a bit further; each rank (you as captain that is...) has a number of 'slots' for available bridge officers. You only have a certain amount of slots when fully leveled, but when ranking up you should not have to dismiss a bridge officer, even when changing ship(types).

I hope this helped.

Have fun playing!

You can only lose BOffs if you deliberately discharge them manually.

Although you can assign any BOff to any type of ship you want. The type and rank of each slot will determine what abilities that BOff can use on that ship. Each ship, even within the same types (Escorts, e.g.) have different number of slots and ranks for each slot.

Eventually... you will want to have different BOffs for different types of ships. Some of my Tactical boffs have Tactical Team and cannon abilities (like cannon scatter volley) that are best for Escorts. Other Tactical boffs have Fire at Will that's best for a Cruiser. Same for Engineering and Science BOffs.
