# 1 Romulan lifespan?
05-02-2013, 03:21 AM
Since LoR is just round the corner, I'm starting to think about backstory for the new character I will be creating. What I'm wondering though, is how long Romulans in general live for? Would an officer in 2409 have had a father serving aboard a warbird during the TOS period, or a grandfather?

This character is why I don't play my Romulan any more. Tovan Khev is NOT my BFF! Get him off my bridge!

Pretty sure its about the same as Vulcans, so around 200 years or so.

yes his father could have served in TOS time, even as a younger man then had the child much later in life, who could then be serving now.

D'Tan was in TNG as a young man, and he still appears to be in his prime. http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/D'Tan

Identical to vulcans (oldest I know of is 230 years old) but 200 is not uncommon

The only canon evidence (i.e. from the shows) that I know of is two things from Unification: that Pardek has served in the Senate for nine decades, and that he was at the Khitomer conference (in Star Trek VI), and he looks maybe the equivalent of 60 in human terms. Based on that I'd agree with you guys, about the same lifespan as Vulcans.

The Romulan lifespan is noted to be still prodigious and it's not uncommon for certain members of the species to pass two centuries of age.

Romulans share the longevity common to their Vulcan cousins. In "Unification", the Romulan Senator Pardek shared a friendship with Ambassador Spock lasting at least 80 years.

Interesting, thanks. I checked Memory Alpha, but the Romulan page didn't include anything about their lifespan in the Physiology section. XD

I'd say the same as Vulcans, though all species (including Human) live longer in the 23rd/24th century. Admiral Archer was still around at the time of Kirk. We also saw McCoy in TNG too.

That sounds like the general concensus. What I'm going for with this LoR character backstory is that his father was a junior officer aboard the Bird of Prey that was destroyed by the USS Enterprise in the episode 'The Balance of Terror'. His father's death, and a desire to avenge it, lead my character to join the Imperial Fleet at a young age. He serves as a warbird Commander during the Dominion War, in the process learning more about the Federation, and putting aside some (but not all) of his prejudice against them. By 2409 he's a veteran commander, but after being ordered to attack Romulan civilians by Tal Shiar officers he resigns his commission, and retires to a life of peaceful obscurity on a backwater farming colony. This is where the LoR storyline picks up, which I'm really looking forward to trying out!

Does this sound plausible?

What year did "Balance of Terror" happen in ? Since your characters father died on that ship, your character is probably really old by now....
