The description of a Particle Generator buff, for example on the Nukara universal console, says that it increases exotic damage.
Yet the power description of, for example, Gravity Well II says the damage is increased by the Particle Generator skill but also says it does kinetic damage, not exotic.

"Exotic Damage" is really not a type of energy (like Kinetic, Plasma or Antiproton are), but more a category of ability types.

The best way to describe it is "Any damage dealt by a non-weapon source."

This includes abilities such as Gravity Well and Tractor Beam (which are both Kinetic energy type), but also Eject Warp Plasma and Plasma Shockwave (which are both Plasma energy type).

What about Plasma DoT proc from energy weapons, torpedoes and mines? The damage of them doesn't seem to be enhanced at all by plasma consoles or Particle Generators. While we're here: do they stack? From the same source? Different sources? No stacking at all?

That still makes it confusing as those abilities are not marked as Exotic.
When there are items which increase Exotic damage, then abilities must be marked as exotic, either as a addition like "exotic kinetic" or as its own damage type.

Just wondering, wouldn't it make more sense to have exotic as its own damage type?
eg
8 Energy types/Kinteic/Exotic?

That way sci abilities require players in pvp to have not just 3neuts+1mono armors and chuckle at sci powers like gravity well?
Your Heavy Graviton Beam deals 26470 (10583) Kinetic Damage(Critical) to Assimilated Carrier.

hmmm... i think I am confused now. I must not have understood what you think exotic damage is.

From the description it sounded like it enhanced procedures. Like with Disruptors it enhanced the Debuff, with Plasma it enhanced the DOT.

Maybe there is better wording than Exotic

I'm sorry, I'm honestly not sure how to make it any clearer.

So, does that mean a Plasma dot by a weapon does not count as exotic since a weapon was triggered, but the dot from eject warp plasma does??

Correct.

Don't associate it with Damage Type. It all has to do with activation, not outcome.

basically, yes; plasma DoTs don't count as exotic damage since they rely on weapons fire to be applied, but EWP does, since it comes from a power (and its damage is boosted by particle generators)

this begs a question, however...what about the plasma fire procs from romulan embassy consoles? those come on the consoles, yet they're applied to weapons; does that make them exotic or non-exotic? personally, i'm thinking non-exotic
