# 1 Is the B'rel out of scale?
05-14-2013, 02:12 AM
I am mainly on my Klink Char, but recently I have decided to restart my fed char off again, as he was my very first build on STO, and like with many first timers, he was set up all wrong, so I decided to scrap him, and start again.

I have just finished "the doomsday machine" mission off, and something struck me as very odd. When you are on the planet surface, and a B'rel is landed on the ground, you can stand right next to it, but the perspective seems to be all out of proportion.

According to this diagram, it should be much bigger. For example, you can see the bridge in the "saucer section" at the front, but on the mission, my klink char would struggle to fit inside the saucer section on his own!

My Klink pilots a B'rel, so I was surprised to see it portrayed as something much smaller than it actually is!

Because it is a static model in a level, I can dismiss this as a one off error, but has anyone else spotted scaling problems with the ships?

Yes, it's a bit too small.
But TBH, if it were at the proper size it would be gigantic.

and most of the ships in this game are a bit out of proportion.
In particular small craft like shuttles are larger than they should be because otherwise you couldn't see them.

Oh, BTW that's a nice fanfiction diagram there.
It's completely wrong about a lof of things given what the recent Hayne's manual tells us, but it's still nice.

When they introduced the KDF mission Alpha, which also has an undersized BoP, they discussed this a bit in a blog or Q&A or something. A BoP properly scaled would take up most of the map.

I do love the ground missions where you do see the B'Rel parked on the ground. Or even at the Shipyard. The classic BOP has always looked good to me.

I can understand that the bop would take up most of the map, but i would still love to see it! lol

I actually never really realised about the shuttles till they were mentioned!

Also, I used my fed char with my old constitution class crusier (the model from Star Trek II not TOS) and i parked it next to a Galaxy Class at spacedock, and the size difference is epic! I would have thought that the Constitution class should be bigger than it is, not as big as the Galaxy Class i grant you, but still more than it is now!

The size of the Klingon B'Rel has been a puzzle for the last four decades, actually:

Across various movies and series episodes it has been shown as any size ranging from 50m to 650m long!

I was about to say that. But at least the K'Vort has been canonically stated as being an entirely different class, rather than a shameful mix-up of studio model scales.

Which is why there are different class names for the different Klingon BoPs.. such as B'rel, D-12 or their bigger brother.. the K'Vort!

I think the problem is that the B'rel model was used constantly throughout the 1980s for every single klingon ship, from the smallest bird of prey to galaxy-class sized cruisers because they didn't have the money to make new models all the time and had the ones from the movies, so they just re-used it everywhere.

out of scale?

you think bops are out of scale, check the dimentions for ds9 compared to a vo'quv.(protip, the one you fly is the more massive)

anyway. some size charts these are ingame these... well, they exist.(be nice to have them ingame if the authorship was known...)
Figure out and address the players path of least resistance to reward. this one thing is THE consistent factor undermining all your efforts. be that crafting, raids or starbase projects.
