The game is worth it? yes ... if you have a life and don't play it 24/7 then the game is worth it. I have a job so if the games down i'm usually at work. if the game goes down while im home i don't stress it. I would have been a lifer but the down times caused me to say, I'll wait." I am a gold member i pay monthly. The new content is fabulous i got a tal shair destroyer and am unstoppable. I am a member of the greatest fleet online. My fleet members are great and one purchased me the other tal shair ship so i could combine consoles for even more awesomeness. yup it's worth it.

I just joined yesterday and I'm enjoying it. I'm bothered by a lot of things being behind an IRL currency, but that's what I get for playing a F2P game. But what bothers me more, is that I'm having a hell of a time finding information for beginners. How to make dilithium, when should I purchase upgrades/ships, and I'm constantly worried that I've royally screwed up my character's build (in that it's not acceptable or anywhere near optimal) and if I'll be able to undo it. But, I think it's worth it. I've only played Federation so far, since I'm deciding to stick with 1 faction for now until I get a better grip on the game.

I enjoy playing aspects of STO. It can be a fun Star Trek game. However, if I can't get on to play, then what's the point. I, like many, have spent many hard earned dollars on ships, master keys, outfits, etc. For that reason, it is hard to walk away cold turkey. The more issues I experience in this game, the less likely I am willing to spend money, and the more interest I have in doing something else. Is STO worth the hassle? It is only worth it until you reach your breaking point, and no amount of money invested can stop someone from leaving once they reach that point. For now, I will continue to play with what I have, and should the server go down, I can always do something else that's just as fun if not more.

Well I've cancelled my sub for the time-being, I love the game and i have spent an absolute fortune on it "but", when it comes down to it, I want to be able to play a game that works, not one that's so buggy it just frustrates the hell out of me ... I'll definitely be back at some point, Just don't see it happening anytime soon, Wish you all the best in your captain career's and ill see you all again sometime in the near future! ... but for me, My moneys going to another company for a while ..

You really can't 'screw up' playing this game...

It's does have a steep learning curve, if you want to be all gung-ho about it...,

But if you just play casually and slowly figure out things as you go along, it's one of the easiest MMO's out there to enjoy.

It's not the fanciest and it certainly isn't the most complex, but for a F2P it's a lot of fun.
(and that coming from a hard-liner who has been playing since Beta and has probably spent close to $33 hundred bucks on it)

It a great game for causal players.

Been ignoring this thred for over a week but seeing as there seems to be daily maintenance, no path notes and nearly a 130mb download i have decided to finally reply.

I have been playing the game for over a month, i competed the fed storyline in about a week and spent between ?20-40 on some upgrades then i saw how many issues there were and stopped spending. They game is enjoyable till you hit 50 and finish the story line then its nothing more than grinding for better gear with the limited missions they have on offer, right now im just collecting marks but, seeing as i only like space missions and they are limited in the PvE list its a slow grind even more so when the missions dont work correctly...

Information for beginners is hard to find, all i mostly did was follow the story line but in the process i didnt know about stuff because its not explained. For example, i didnt know i could get some daily duty officers at the Star Fleet Academy (3 in total) or about the lore missions for free dilitium, the foundry and how to make quick EC or the reputation system that im now working on (opens in the 40s think its 46/7 i forget could be wrong). I also found it hard to get marks i required too because the missions are rare for space and romulan and nekuru marks.

Also equipment can be expensive specially if your a free player and limited to the 10mil bank limit! But, you can use the exchange and spend 64k dilithium for 500 zen and unlock that which i recommend (not had 10mil yet, but ive been on 9mil and gear i need is 12mil+)

Here is a list for daily dilithium missions: http://sto.gamepedia.com/Daily
I just do 2 foundry then farm the PvE for 8k dilith though that way im getting everything i need. (2500 omega, 100rom, 100 nekura marks) yes thats how my marks more or less look due to limited space missions for the other factions plus they are damn boring Run, here and fight, run again and fight again yaaaawn

Yes, it's worth the hassle. I've actually had a lot of fun with the Romulan character, and it's made me fall in love with the game all over again. The maintenance is a bit irksome, but if it's necessary, it's necessary. I'd like some more transparency, of course we all would, but I'd rather they work on the problems than gab with us on the forums.

Overall? I would say "yes", tentatively. Would I put money in? No, not at all, for several reasons.

1. The game loves to dc. Even now, it is rare that I don't dc Every 30 or so minutes, frustrating especially when it happens near the end of an STF or fleet action and I get nothing for the effort put in.

2. The bugs. There are a lot of them, the most grating being the torp healing bug. Nothing quite says, "Wtf?!" like using tac team just to have it decide that you don't need it, but your lovely Rommy torp could use a tactical team. This goes double for mines, or hangar pets. There are others, but this is the most grating, as of late, and one that didn't exist until LoR, which has been out for some time now, and thus, seems like we are stuck with it.

This basically screws torps ships and carriers, especially carriers though.

3. Severe balance issues. The idea behind the classes I'm sure was a a "rock, paper, scissors" plan, one class cancelling and out doing the other, but getting crushed by it's counter. This just isn't the case. I'm pretty sure everyone will agree, or at least the vast majority, that escorts are simply given more love, attention, and power. By power I don't simply mean DPS, afterall, that is what they are for, but they pretty much have the same hull and shields, overall, as their science and cruiser counterparts. Toss on two tac teams, and boom, the shield thing isn't even an issue anymore, assuming any type of shield healing aside from that.

This leaves cruisers, and science ships woefully underpowered by comparison, as both have subpar (at best) turn rates, their control skills are a joke (Face it, GW III has probes flying away from them, that shouldn't happen, and EWP can be countered instantly with HE), so much so VM III can be instantly countered with some of the new doffs. This really only leaves these two classes with healing which, frankly, is being outpaced rather quickly as Cryptic seems to only care about increasing DPS, and not actually balancing. I'll grant you, they're finally fixing the overheal that the Rommy's enjoy right now, but even without that, there are escorts that can heal as much, if not more, then ships I've built simply for healing, and such, some of them within my own fleet as we frequently pvp to test new builds. Also, before anyone goes, "Oh, I'm sure they sacrifice damage!", I can assure you, they needn't do such at all, to the contrary.

So really, unless you're going Tactical, or going to blow a lot of dil on tactical ships (or preferably EC for the mirror versions), you shouldn't bother. This can already be seen in at least the fleet I'm in, less then 20% of the nearly 400 members are science. I couldn't speak for other fleets, would be presumptuous of me.

I'm not saying make the science and cruiser ships have a ton more DPS, as that would just unbalance things once more, just that science and engineering ships are sold, when one starts, as skill ***** ships, and quite honestly, they have no more skills then escorts, do less damage, have pitiful turn rates, and their control skills are a joke. The only positive is that they can heal, but even that is iffy, what with the torp bug which randomly screws the heals and takes even that away.

I do apologize for the length, and I'm sure there will be disagreement, especially on point 3, but meh, that's the point of forums.
