# 1 Tanking as a Fed
05-21-2013, 11:39 PM
(I know there's a klink thread as well. I will decide later between fed and kdf as my next toon (saving last one for rommy).)

So, after finding myself surprisingly able to survive in a BoP (...at least longer than I would have expected), I've been thinking of making a toon specifically so I can be a tank and be good at tanking along side dealing decent DPS. My initial thought would be to make an engi character and stick him in a cruiser. However, I've recently heard that cruisers, especially with engi captains, are bad due to their low turn rate, and the best tanks are the sci ships with sci captains.

Is this true? If not, what would be some good cruisers for an engi? Or is there a cruiser that is good for a Tac to be an epic tank in (so I can save time).

There're a multitude of ways to get around the inherent weaknesses of the cruiser. I myself have flown an Engi Cruiser for the longest time with the Aux2Bat build. It regularly hits 1.6k - 1.9k damage per beam. Sure, the damage output is not as good as an escort by any means, but it does have very high tankability and decent damage output. I've more than held my own against BoPs in PvP and Kerrat.

With the recent buffs to EPtX powers, cruisers are slightly more viable as well. I'd probably be running a copy of EPtS and EPtW/EPtE. This would allow me to either fly the cruiser faster or have it hit even harder, all while maintaining tankiness with EPtS3 and perhaps RSP.

I personally fly an engineer with a cruiser and find it lots of fun. Science can tank, I've seen them do it - but I have no problems. Turn rate can be a problem, true - but it can be for science too. A science flying an atrox for instance is going to have the hull and shields for tanking true, but they have the same manuverability as a freaking exploration cruiser.

Personally I've used a star cruiser, free oddysey and 'advanced heavy cruiser retrofit' aka excelsior retrofit - and I gotta say, of the three, the excelsior was the winner of them.

The excelsior retrofit has excellent turn rate, has an extra tactical console compared to many cruisers, and is my favorite ship.

Some alternatives you could try similar to the excelsior retrofit are the assault cruiser, the assault cruiser retrofit, the mirror assault cruiser, the support cruiser retrofit, or the fleet heavy cruiser retrofit. Like the excelsior, they all have three tactical consoles, so you'll be able to do more damage with them than the usual. Of the ships I listed, the fleet heavy cruiser retrofit is the only one that can turn as fast as the excelsior, however they at least aren't as bad as some of the alternatives. Each of them have pluses and minuses - personally, of the cruisers available I still like the excelsior best.

Some notable ships I'd stay away from are the oddysey, exploration retrofit, galaxy dreadnaught, and the star cruiser. All variants of the oddysey are very slow turners and unless you're using the tactical oddy, you're not going to do as much damage as the others I suggested.

The exploration retrofit on the other hand just has nothing going for it now in comparison to the ops oddysey, which is more or less its equivalent or better in every measurable way.

the dreadnaught is an interesting ship and I imagine properly equipped is very damaging in the hands of someone properly motivated, but it's not as suited to tanking as the other options and again is dreadfully slow at turning. I've seen one personally used by a science captain I kid you not to do utterly insane amounts of damage while I zoomed about in my excelsior tanking things.

The star cruisers only notable advantage is that it is not as slow at turning as the exploration cruiser retrofit. The most serious flaw however is that IMHO, this particular ship is possibly the ugliest thing to ever come out of a federation spacedock.

Okay, so lets assume four different scenarios, all of which are probably plausible at this point.

1. You already have a fully levelled engineer and happen to have the support cruiser retrofit ready to go - Okay, that's great. Try that out and see how it works for you. It turns as well as an assault cruiser and should be able to do comparable damage most of the time compared to the assault cruiser/excelsior, and has more science abilities so you should be able to get a little extra healing out of it if you need it.

2. You have a fully levelled engineer but didn't get the support cruiser retrofit when it was available, didn't get the assault cruiser, and currently have some other ship I didn't recommend like the star cruiser - Okay, that's not so great. You probably want to save time money and frustration - rather than saving up the dilithium to buy a assault cruiser or spending zen on buying one of the other ships I listed, search the exchange for the mirror assault cruiser. They tend to go for fairly cheap, and it's roughly equivalent to an assault cruiser, though since it's got the appearance of the star cruiser is again not my favorite choice.

3. You're making a new engineer from scratch - Okay, just remember that when you get the token for the rear admiral ship to get the assault cruiser and you'll be set.

If none of these easier to get options work out for you because the ship just isn't turning fast enough, the excelsior retrofit or fleet heavy cruiser retrofit might be a good thing to go for. Personally I'd go for the excelsior since it's roughly equivalent of the fleet heavy cruiser, costs the same amount of zen to get, you'll get a discount on buying the fleet excelsior when you can, and *that* ship has nearly identical hull and shield stats of the oddysey.

Oh, and one more thing - I've seen plenty of tacs claim to use the excelsior for straight tanking, as well as doing crazy things like loading it up with single cannons and turrets with two rcs and using it like it's a freaking escort. Which still boggles me, but I'm certainly going to be giving that configuration a try once I fully level my fed tac. I can't personally claim to know if it works, but it should be a fun thing to do.

I'd give a link to my ship's old configuration and setup, but it's for prior to the recent legacy of romulus expansion, and some of it just isn't valid anymore. I'm still figuring it out myself, so I'm wary of updating it just yet.

Anyway, just my two cents.
