# 1 GeForce 9400?
01-18-2010, 10:59 AM
Can anyone tell me how the game plays on a Geforce 9400? It's just a little below system reqs, so I'm hesitant to buy the lifetime if it's also going to cost me a new vid card.

Thanks!

While I haven't actually tried it, I'd hazard a guess that it'll likely not play STO very well.

It will "run" STO, but the performance will not be enjoyable. I wouldn't be surprised if parts of the open beta cause this card to screech to a halt at points.

Are we talking about the 9400M in a Macbook or Macbook Pro? If so, the game runs fine at low/medium settings. It's playable.

That's even slower than a desktop 9400 card. What resolution are you gaming at, and if it's running fine, are you doing any other steps or changing any other graphics settings? Chances are, you're running at a low framrate with low settings and it will probably lag during graphically intensive moments. The 9400 is not marketed as a gaming card. For NVIDIA, gaming cards start at the x500 mark, such as 9500 and up.

I'm running at the Macbook's native resolution 1280 x 800 with a lot of the extra graphic options off but with things like character textures and environmental textures at medium. I'm in the process of bumping up my graphics as much as I can without taking a hit. I should also note that Ventrilo and STO are the only applications open when I play, but the only time I experience any kind of graphical slowdown is for a second after loading in.

With nVidia cards, the first number is the "Series" and the second number is the "Strength" so-to-speak.

So a Series 8 card with 8 strength is going to out perform a series 9 card with only 4 strength.

Or, better yet. You can consider the first number the Vintage and the second number the Alcohol Content.

9400 might be a better, newer year, but the 8800 will pack a much stronger punch
