Hi everyone,

So the Pi Canis freighter assault is pretty cut & dried for me at this point on my first two KDF chars. Cloak, run out ahead of the transports to the second marker, decloak & attack. Using this approach, I completely avoid the first Starfleet vessel to warp in, and have time enough to get the second reinforcement and 5 freighters for the optional.

However, I now have my first KDF character that is not flying a Klingon (cloaked) ship; he's an Orion in a flight-deck cruiser. Anyone have any advice on how to make the attack when you're not in a cloaked ship? My first impulse is to get an alternate Science officer standing by who is trained in Mask Energy Signature, and simply keep doing what I've been doing. Anyone got any other approaches to share?

Thanks in advance.

I ran it in a Galor for quite sometime till I found easier ways to generate Dilithium. I found having both eject warp plasma and vent theta radiation (console) allow we to slow down the freighters so I could take out her escorts first.

Gravity well might come in handy, I never used it though. The Scorpion fighter device from the vault was handy for providing distractions, so were the deployable turret device.

Even so I found it a challenge doing it solo, I think the trick is crowd control, holding the freighters so they don't get too far away while you deal with the escorts and raid the first few freighters before they get to the next marker and another escort jumps in.

I do this mission in a escort type ship, i just zip past the first freighters to the second group.

and take it from there.

Id be sure to have something to disable/hold the forward ships, if I was a sci, to help keep em in place. grav well, tractor beam, TB repulsers might be a good choice as well, to push em back far enough to deal with the escorting ships first.

Yes, here's some advice. Use (effectively) the same tactic: Fly to the 2nd marker and attack the freighters from the front, bypassing the first Feddie. The trick to doing it sans cloak it to fly UP and OVER the target ships (down and under would work too, I suppose, but for my mind's eye/spatial awareness, I prefer to be over the battlefield).

From the spawn-in point, prior to moving, I angle my ship so it's pointing as far upwards as possible, then go full impulse. I keep this upwards trajectory until I'm over 11-15k higher than the Starfleet vessel, then I'll level-off, and come back down at the 2nd Marker. If I go up too high, sometimes I overshoot the Marker, but it's no big deal to turn around and come straight on to the freighters (still plenty of time to get them all).

With some practice, this "going overhead" avoidance technique is just as effective as going straight through with cloak. So much so, that to avoid any possible sightings-while-cloaked, I do this same tactic whether I'm cloaked or not.

Good luck, and happy hunting!

Thanks a ton, man. It hadn't yet occurred to me that "up & over" might work. I'll give that a try when I get down to this.

One more thing I never explicitly got: exactly what triggers the arrival of the two Starfleet ships? Is it when the freighters arrive at the first two markers?

Oh, and lordhavelock, if you're full-on cloaked, you can zip right through the freighter convoy, I thread the needle like that all the time. Heck, on my sleepier night's I think I've bumped into the freighters while cloaked, without incident.

You're welcome, I'm happy to help!

I don't exactly know the triggers. I've never honestly paid that close attention. I'm always too busy keeping track of which freighters are which. Between needing to disable them, raid them, and possibly needing to disable again, if (when) I get interrupted, all the while not killing any one of them too early (I don't know if it's a bug or not, but I've had the mission/optional mission fail if I actually kill a freighter too soon, but not always (which is why I think it might be a bug)). So yeah, never really know when Starfleet is gonna show up.

Perhaps it's from my old PvP days (where players can see through cloak if you get too close). Perhaps it's that cloak sometimes fails (like when a BO opens his mouth to tell me something)... I dunno, I just don't have much trust in cloak in this game. That being said, I literally busted out laughing by your description of bumping into a freighter, and not breaking cloak, while sleep-raiding. LOL

Cloak is good for the damage bonus, but not essential. The two biggest tips are AOE (area of effect) attacks and the up-and-over tactic of taking out the lead 3 freighters first. Knock out the first 3, take on the Starfleet ship, then quickly take out the other 3 freighters while mashing "F" to beam over cargo of the first 3. You should be able to do this before the 2nd Starfleet ship arrives and not even have to fight it.

I usually swing out to the left, beyond 10 km, and get ahead of the first trio of freighters. Disable them, kill the defender, grab the loot, repeat.

So I figured I'd drop word that I finally got the optional in my flight-deck cruiser. It turned out that cloaking/not cloaking never ended up being the issue. I basically barged right through the convoy at full impulse, turned around at the second marker, and opened fire. The key seems to be not launching fighters until all of the freighters are decently forward; otherwise they seem to aggro that first-responder Starfleet vessel, which drags the fight out too long and lets the freighters escape.

Later on,

Jam Sensors is also a great BOff ability to take for this mission when you're going for the optional: Stops the feds shooting at you while you beam up the cargo.
