# 1 Cannons or Beams on a Dread
06-21-2013, 05:53 AM
Howdy all. I have been playing with a dread for about 2 weeks now and I have used 4 single cannons in front and 4 turrets in back, all phasers with the phaser dmg consoles. I haven't tried using any beam arrays atm due to being credit-less. What are your guys opinion on which one is better? I'm a tac officer btw. Thanks for any help!

Unfortunately, despite it being the only Fed cruiser that can mount dual cannons, its turn rate pretty much locks it into being a beam cruiser. It just can't get its big butt turned around fast enough to keep those cannons on anything more mobile than a Borg cube. I played around with mine for a while to see if I could get a cannon build working, but you just have to sacrifice too much of your durability. You wind up worse off than an escort would be.

I haven?t played with a Dread in a very long while. You will always be married to the phaser thanks to the lance. Back in the day as an engineer cannons netted more DPS by a good margin if you knew how to maneuver your ship to keep all guns on target. Cycling 2 directed energy modulation (DEM) powers was worth roughly 10% DPS boost during a run on a parser. With beams DEM was lucky to net half that thanks to the way the proc works. You might could get more out of it with your tactical (TAC) captain powers in a cannon build than I was able too. The new (at least to me) RCS consoles look like they could make a four dual cannon build viable for PVE which would be a significant DPS increase over what I noted with both DEM and TAC captain powers.

However, we are playing in the day of auxiliary to battery builds (A2B) ruling the roost amongst cruisers and a Dread is well suited to running it. You don?t have the TAC bridge officer slots to really maximize a cannons effectiveness but beams aren?t so demanding to get big numbers from when power is available. Seven or eight beams with ample power is nothing to brush off lightly.

I don?t know what you are willing to grind out EC for. The needed duty officers for a cannon / DEM build are much cheaper at last look than those needed for an A2B build. It should also be noted that most people running an A2B build right now are using plasma, embassy consoles, and such that the Dread isn?t always best suited for being a phaser favoring ship.

In your shoes, I might favor the dual cannon, dual DEM, dual RCS build with a TAC captain for the price and potential performance. The Dread doesn?t really feel or play like a ?Dreadnought? in the current version of the game thanks to the stats, BOFF, and console layout. It?s dated and actual dreadnought ships like the Jem?Hadar Dreadnought carrier and upcoming Scimitar are making their way into the game. Battle Cruisers and Assault Cruisers make it feel more like an ordinary engineering cruiser with a couple of perks than a warship. It needs an update but can still be fun.

If you go cannon build, you pretty much have to build it as the ultimate alpha striker. Decloak, and hit as hard as you can and hope your target is space dust, because after you spent your payload you will be squishy as hell compared to a tanking cruiser.
A science or tactical captain could do it, but an engineer will have a hard time.

Right, so you basically wind up trying to fly it as a poor man's escort, rather than just fly an escort. That's why I gave up on it. You'd think a "Dreadnaught" would be specced to deal damage, but since it inherits the Gal-R's Eng-heavy Boff layout and abysmal turn rate it's stuck in the same tank/support role.

Stick the photonic displacer on it and open up with a lance and beam overload alpha strike. If you have fun in it then it works.

Running beams or cannons means you're playing 2 different styles.

Beam boat the Dread Is more suited as turn won't be as big an issue and you can keep sustained pressure dps on target until a lance strike opportunity comes up. I like running the Dread this way with 5 beams, DBB and 2 transphasic cluster torps for added spike.

Cannons you'll have much less pressure dps so you'll make your attack run them switch to full power to Aux and truly support your team. I've tried this strategy but didn't like it as much bc with the Aux2batt build your support abilities are limited.

Unfortunately until we get the fleet dreadnought with 4 tac console slots and ltcommander tactical station and a fix for the accuracy of the Lance there are better ships for this role.

That Lt. Cdr tac slot would be big. With just that small change you could run APO to help both with maneuverability and damage potential. With A2B you'd have about 50% uptime on it.

With the new RCS Accelerator[ResAll] and Neutronium[Turn] from the Fleet Dilithium Mine, on top of the new way Skills and RCS affect turnrate introduced with LoR, it should be much more viable to get a slow boat like the Galaxy-X to line up DHCs without loosing survivability in PvE. It'd make lining up your single cannons almost trivial.

In PvE you don't even need RCS consoles just line up and unload and tank.
