Hi, I am wondering what the best science ship for my science toon is. I currently have an cruiser (noob mistake from a while back).
I am currently looking at the Atrox and the Vesta. Which one should I aim for?

I normally go for the Rule of Cool, which is to get the one that you like most or would fly most. That is unless you want to min/max your build.

If as a start you want to play with a cheap science vessel, hit the Exchange and check for Mirror Universe Science Vessels. Right now you can get one that is less than 25,000 EC.

I bought a Reconnaissance Science Vessel just to have fun and because of #1, the Rule of Cool (I like the look) and #2 it has a bit more punch with the 2 Tac seats.

EDIT: I'm a non-power creep semi-casual player. If you're more into it, disregard my comment. But you can always buy a Fleet ship after trying the matching Mirror version.

Most people will tell you to get the Vesta since it has the most flexible seating and loadout options. But fed has a lot of science ships and there's some interesting flavor in the variety, everything from the Science Vessel Retrofit (an science-centered assault ship) all the way up to Science Odyssey (a science-oriented cruiser) to the advanced escort retrofit (a science-friendly escort). The other factions dream of this stuff, seems a waste to just buy the bell-ringer.

Haven't used it myself, but i hear the wells class is an amazing pure science vessel.
It's not cheap on the exchange though.

Looking at stats and boff layout the http://sto.gamepedia.com/Voth_Palisade_Science_Vessel is also amazing.

When you want something a bit cheaper then i'd say grab one of the mirror science vessels of the exchange. I'd have to check but i'd be surprised if they're above 100k EC each.

The Attrox is not a science vessel, it is a carrier. There is a huge difference in playstyle between carriers and true science vessels. While the Vesta has a single hangar, it is a science vessel in all respects. The Vesta is very versatile, but if you are looking for a specific science setup, there are more precise choices.

The Vesta and Wells are great ships. If you're going for a drain build the Voth Palisade is the best one.

There's no best sci ship necessarily.
But obviously the top tiered ship are more durable and have more Boff stations.

The most important thing to do before anything is to decide who your captain is, and realize what skill you need to invest in.
Ex: Do you want to be in a hulking crusier absorbing mass damage and beam broadsiding everything with a heat signature within a 10k radius ?
Do you want to be in a Recluse carrier, at a slow cruise, just outside of the main fray, unleshing pet spam hell and healing commrades like the Red Cross ?
Do you want to pilot the Temporal Destroyer Mobius and whip in an out of combat with dizzing speeds, loaded with DHCs delivering huge DPS, AND subnuking/sensor scanning your opponents into hysterical rage ?

Point is, every play style requires different skill investments and specialization. And IMO some career paths work well with different ships ...because of console and Boff setups

Once you've decided your play style, Go browse gear, find out which consoles you need for your build/playstyle.
Then match that with the end game ships. Check the console setup, make sure the ship caters to your build.
Ex you need 4 sci consoles but ship x only has 2 sci console slots

Same must be done with boffs and available Boff stations.
A boff ability is greatly affected by which skills your captain has invested in.
Ex, you'll need to invest captain skill points into the "Decompiler" skill to have a strong Viral Matrix.
Note on choosing skills: Specialization is key, you never want to be average all around... Just because your def/off skills will only be... Average.
*Not necessarily a bad thing*

Once you've decided which Boff abilities youll need, look for a good match in a ship.
Same as the consoles, ex: you need 4 sci abilities but ship x only has 3 sci Boff stations.
Shop around until you find the right balance between console availability and Boff setup.
Then you will have found....your true "Inner Ship" and be one with everything

My main is a sci and I fly a Fleet Heavy Escort Carrier. I have always liked the Akira class and found the Armitage skin to be nice. But the best ship due to sheer flexibility is probably the Vesta. But really, any fleet level ship would do for nearly all content.

Can I ask why you think a sci toon in a cruiser is a "noob mistake"?
