# 1 Rising Phoenix - Part Two
09-19-2013, 11:10 PM
While we may have our qualms or different feelings about one another, Devs, or the state of the game and the tool we love in it, we are all in the end authors once we publish a mission. We know the time, the dedication, the sweat, the testing, the frustrations, and the joys.

We all know what it is like to want to tell a story.

As you may be aware, there is one story that has been left unfinished. h2orat's "Rising Pheonix - Part One" is a spotlighted mission created by a man who's legacy and passions are all we have left of him. While true most players will not know who he was, they still are appreciating the work he did as Cryptic Developer and as a Foundry Author.

Upon reading the mourning thread I couldn't find words to express the right respect and sorrow. The best action I thought I could take was to play the mission he made, not as a Dev, but as a player. It is with great regret that the original author will not be able to complete his work.

But I wonder if as a memorial to a fellow Author it is something we can do as a show of respect.

I ask the community if it is something we would like to consider, for one or more of us to take on the project of comprising a finale for Rising Phoenix? Is this something we feel is in respectful taste? Is it something we should leave in its current state out of memory?

Do we want to make a memorial in the form of finishing h2orat's mission?

It's not uncommon for friends or family to take up where the author left off. Many Japanese authors and mangaka have done this out of love and respect for the departed.

IMHO, if the rumors are true in what Stahl has been saying with Foundry Cooperative (2 or more authors on a mission), and it is implemented, perhaps a team of H2orat's friends could continue off where he left off. I didn't know him, but perhaps he had already started on Part Two or written notes somewhere, laying out more detail of the story. If he did, that could give you a stepping stone.

If there is no Foundry Cooperative, then the authors get together, brainstorm on the plot, the direction, and then the map designs. All that's left is what author will be honored with the task.

Will someone please make this happen. I did not know him but this seems like it is the best type of memorial possible. The mission and H2Orat's memory deserve nothing less.

I think it would be absolutely amazing to see the Foundry community come together to author Part 2. As many players taking part in it as possible would be exactly what Mark would have loved to see I know that the actual mission can only be built by one person, but everyone can take part in the planning, story boarding, script, design, layout, etc.

We're gonna do some brainstorming on this week's Foundry Roundtable. I think you had a good idea when you posted that it could be the next challenge topic.
The Foundry Roundtable live Wednesdays at 7:30PM EST/4:30PM PST on twitch.tv/thefoundryroundtable

A few players also messaged me with this idea, but I'm now wondering if having it be a "contest" (since the Foundry Challenges are actually contests) is the right platform when looking at why Part 2 is being created. I'm interested to hear what you and your fellow authors think.

Cheers,

It will certainly be a good thing to bring up in the discussion.

While a Phoenix part two Foundry Challange would be a great tribute, would it meet h2orat's vision? I realize that no one can know what he had planned (or maybe someone does know) I believe that only his close STO friends could do it justice.

I cannot claim to be one of those lucky individuals, as we only spoke once, but this really needs to be done right.

If done as a Foundry Challange, would too many spoilers need to be given to get it right? If done by a small group of his in game friends it may become an epic sequel that could really do Phoenix, and h2orat, justice.

My two cents.

I kind of feel like a challenge is somewhat of a degradation of the intent, to be honest. H2Orat was a dev that decided that the Foundry mattered, which honestly seems kind of rare for a STO dev. That's why H20rat was loved by the Foundry community. He was one of the devs who cared and also recognized what we go through to do what we do.

I think he would have appreciated this challenge if it was a challenge to the devs to STO, to learn the Foundry, make a Foundry mission, and discover what you personally could do, like your players. To ask the players to take up the spirit of that challenge is to misrepresent the challenge that H20rat took on.

So, a contest? Yes. But, this should be a contest among the folks who knew him. Not the players. Branflakes and others should try to make a Foundry mission with an intent of honoring a friend and a colleague. That endeavor would teach them so much. That, I believe, would honor the memory of a fallen comrade.

I hope it doesn't seem like I'm using this moment as a convenient excuse to get STO devs interested in the Foundry. But, if it did do that, I think H20rat would be proud, based on my very limited knowledge of the guy.

I didn't know the guy. Cryptic devs did.

I agree with Kirkfat, don't make it a contest.

Like I said above, get his friends together and brainstorm, then choose one among you to have the honor. That or you guys making it a multi-part story and everyone publishes an episode.
