# 1 Tractor Beam needs some love.

Hello all.

Since the buff of EptE since LoR and the increased powercreep with powerlevels these days and the extensive use of dampeners because of the awesome Intertial dampeners doff that reduces the cooldown, tractor beam has gotten a whole lot weaker.

Some small tests that ive done on a test target. (Mind you, a Recluse with a pretty low impulse modifier)

Engines at an average level of: 75
Borg engine (Not even a hyper which would increase speed even more)
2x EptE rotating, 2x damps with the doff.

Result
I needed:
- 9 In Graviton Generators
- 4x Embassy 31+ Graviton Gen consoles
- Romulan Deflector that gives +40 to gravitons.
- 125 Aux

And i still had problems getting my target to reduce to an acceptable level, bonus defense hardly dropped below 60% (From the 70% on test subject)

Higher level tractor beams like II and III only slightly increase the duration and 'damage', for whatever the damage is worth (Pretty much nothing)

My suggestion is to increase Tractor beam strenght or increase the hold strenght significantly to make the use of TB2 and 3 some value, because at this moment its simply a waste of higher ranks.

Even the tractor beam mines are more effective then the Bridge officer equivalent these days.

Definately something to consider for Season 8.

Weren't you one of the ones defending epte in my nerf epte thread about a week ago?

Tractor beam definitely needs a buff, especially tb2 and tb3. The hold strength needs to be increased for all ranks, and scale up a lot for tb2 and tb3. Aux power and grav generator skill need to buff it more. EPTE still needs a nerf though.

It seems to me the only still effective TB is the Assimilated one you get from the full Assimilated set. It holds incredibly well, even targets under EPtE and EM have difficulty getting out unless they hit an APO or SJ.

Other than that, TB in general is a joke (unless you have 20 NPC ships spamming it).
It is said the best weapon is one that is never fired. I disagree. The best weapon is one you only have to fire... once.
Tired of Wasting EC and Time trying to get Superior Romulan Operative BOffs? Here's a cheap and easy way to get them, with an almost 100% chance of success.

Most science boff abilities need to be reworked entirely.

Personally I'm one of those players of the opinion that tractor beams should not be a bridge officer ability, but rather be a default piece of equipment built into every ship.

Yes, EptE is fine, but cryptic simply neglected the fact that TB's are alot less worth it now.

(sorry pve guys this is not realy relevant to PvE I think lol)

It's not AS relevant in PvE. It is still relevant and any change to an ability affects both to some degree. A lot of PvE science builds are drain builds which use tractor beams and the doff.

On topic:

I think EptE needs to be nerfed hard in terms of it's speed bonus rather than buff tractor beams. If you really wanna know why, go into ESD area, remove your engines and hit EptE. You fly like you have engines!

Has damage got out of control?

Personally, I'd like a tractor beam that just tractors. None of that magic stop-dead-in-space business, no causing damage. Just tractoring, a pulling force drawing both ships closer together in accordance with their relative masses. In Netrek, we had a tractor beam that did just this, no more, no less. And it was great, you could use it to perform tractor-slingshots off both friends and enemies alike.

I agree completely. Tractor beam, especially when trying to hold ANYTHING with epte is just plain terrible. It should be boosted significantly, with higher level versions giving significantly more -repel.

Please. Make more higher level science abilities as useful. Thanks.

SFC had TBs lock the tgt relative to the guy using the TB. So instead of holding the tgt in place while you fly by , you would in effect lock the tgt and push him in the exact position he is relative to you. Made for some interesting strategies while you pushed the tgt into asteroids, let plasma catch them etc. It also allowed for timed alphas without the need to split second keyboard mashing to get your alpha off. Anyways, its still sci fi but a TB killing all momentum of the tgt and locking it in place it the least plausible of all three setups. I never did like TBs in STO that much.

IMO, if its sci-fi instead of sci-fantasy, the mass of the targets would be incorporated into the behavior. If you tried to tractor a moon, you'd just pull your ship into the moon. Same for two ships--a small escort that tries to tractor a dread should pull itself to the dread. TBR would repel the lighter object, maybe you repel projectiles and fighters/shuttles, but trying to TBR a borg cube would just push your own ship away.
